As I live through my twelfth year of celebrating nurses’ week, I am filled with gratitude. Nursing was never something in my bones, it was never something I pictured myself doing, and yet when I reflect on the past twelve years, I cannot imagine what my life would look like without nursing at the core. I’ve been the PICU nurse, the peds med-surg nurse, the peds oncology nurse, and the nursing educator. Each role has shaped me into the person I am today. I have learned more than I could have ever imagined from the physicians, the fellow nurses, the patients, their families, the students, all of them have taught me more about life than I could ever put into words. Healthcare is not perfect. Nursing is not easy. There are days that are painful, there are days you wish to forget, but those pale in comparison to the joy you experience, the prayers you see answered, and the part you play in a patients story. From a patient’s first breath to their last, nurses play an irreplaceable part in the life of another. Never underestimate your role as a nurse. Never doubt your calling. You matter. We matter.
