In response to rapidly increasing student interest, expanding bioengineering research opportunities and exponential industry growth, the Department of Bioengineering was founded in 2014. By building on competencies established in graduate bioengineering education within our Chemical Engineering department, and expanding into more comprehensive multidisciplinary areas of bioengineering, the Department in 2021 reached student enrollment of 871 including over 650 undergraduate students.

Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death for men in the United States. Northeastern University’s Roux Institute professor Saeed Amal has worked to create an exciting breakthrough in prostate cancer grading. Amal and other researchers at Northeastern University, MaineHealth Institute for Research, and MaineHealth Maine Medical Center have discovered promising results regarding a web tool for cancer management. “This work will provide a more accurate and timelier diagnosis and grading than the manual existing process in prostate cancer diagnosis,” he explained. “This will reduce the time for diagnosis, grading, and treatment, and will result in greatly improved patient care.” Want to learn more about Amal’s research and other work being done at the Roux? Asst. Professor Saeed Amal led a group of Northeastern University researchers in developing an #AI architecture designed to detect breast cancer. Researchers say it has achieved an accuracy rate of 99.72%. This project is part of a larger effort by Amal to create an online framework doctors can access to diagnose a range of cancers using innovative AI technologies. "The AI would look at the high resolution images and would learn from historical data how to identify cancer patterns and perform diagnoses," he said.
