Join the Buffett Institute's Shifting Shorelines Global Working Group for a public talk by MIT anthropologist and ocean studies scholar Stefan Helmreich. He will discuss how oceanographers and coastal engineers across the world represent waves as avatars of an oceanic nature at once periodic and irreversible, wild and pacific, ephemeral and eternal. The argument is that wave science, so bound up with prediction, is about time and orientations toward the future—coastal, environmental, national, political and planetary. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Corey Byrnes, co-lead of Shifting Shorelines and Associate Professor of the Environmental Humanities and Chinese Culture. ?? Tuesday, October 8 at 5:00–6:15 p.m. ?? 720 University Place, Evanston ?? Register to attend: https://spr.ly/6041UKE5l

Happy New Week fam! Access to safe and legal abortion remains a global public health issue, with Kenya serving as a critical case study in the ongoing struggle for reproductive rights. Although our constitution allows abortion when a woman's life or health is at risk, access remains severely restricted due to stigma, lack of awareness, and limited medical services. Unsafe abortion is a leading cause of maternal mortality in Kenya, with thousands of women resorting to dangerous procedures each year. The global community must continue to advocate for comprehensive reproductive health services that are safe, legal, and accessible to all women. Empowering women with knowledge, quality healthcare, and ability to exercise their bodily autonomy is key to addressing this issue. I will be speaking at the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs’ Symposium on Global Abortion Access to share our experience and the lessons we are learning even as we call for global solidarity on this important issue that is under attack. #Womenlivesmatter #ICRWAfrica #WomenReproductiveServices #WomenSolidarity

Northwestern University faculty, postdocs and students are invited to join a lunch seminar on "A Book of Waves" hosted by the Buffett Institute's Shifting Shorelines Global Working Group. In the book, MIT's Stefan Helmreich examines ocean waves as forms of media that carry ecological, geopolitical and climatological news about our planet. Drawing on ethnographic work with oceanographers and coastal engineers across the world, Helmreich details how scientists apprehend and study waves. Interleaving ethnographic chapters with reflections on waves in mythology, surf culture, feminist theory, film, Indigenous Pacific activisms, Black Atlantic history, cosmology and more, Helmreich demonstrates how waves mark out the wakes and breaks of social histories and futures. ?? Tuesday, October 8 at 12:00–1:30 p.m. ?? 720 University Place, Evanston ?? Register by October 3 to attend: https://spr.ly/6042o2vgj
