I spent a weekend with a rocket scientist. (Yes, really. A rocket scientist.) I’ve known him for a few years now, he is a warm and caring friend BUT most of the time I literally do not understand most of what he is saying. He uses complex words that most people don’t use very often, and I have trouble trying to figure out what it is he is trying to communicate. And so, on this weekend trip I decided to say something. I told him that most of the time, I only understand about 20% of what he’s saying, and could he just… dumb it down for me. He replied that he was sorry, he didn’t mean to do that, and it’s just his natural approach to things. “Feel free to stop me and ask me any questions,” he said. Which is great, except that for the last few years I’ve missed the bulk of what he has been saying. Our relationship could have been deeper sooner, and I could have learned more if his communication was simpler. Although, of course, he’s a brilliant guy, I don’t really think of him as being particularly smarter or better because of the big words he uses. In fact, I would argue that everybody should be able to understand what you’re saying without translation to make the maximum impact. If you’re in front of a group, large or small, you will lose your audience if they’re constantly trying to understand what you’re saying. Keep it simple, keep it clear, keep it concise. Disappointment or hurt almost always comes from missed expectations. So, in theory, if you don’t expect anything from other people, you won’t be hurt. I realize that’s a rather simplistic statement, which at first glance is hard to get your head around. But think of it more as a reframing. You can have expectations of yourself – for example, that you will find and hire the right people, that you will motivate, manage and support them. But you can only control what YOU do or don’t do - you cannot control what others do or do not do. If your team or your partner or your kids meet your expectations, that’s great. But when they don’t, you’re disappointed. Therefore, having zero expectations of others is, in its own strange way, actually empowering. You can truly only control expectations for yourself.
