Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution (HAMMER) Engineering Research Center, led by The Ohio State University, will advance national goals to assert American leadership in advanced manufacturing by developing and transitioning new manufacturing technologies to industry use, driving new technical education and credentialing that will prepare, upskill, or reskill the workforce, and expand capabilities across the manufacturing supply chain to meet national needs. Through basic, applied and translational research, NSF HAMMER-ERC will accelerate the development and deployment of intelligent autonomous manufacturing systems that will use multiple processes to control material properties and component dimensions to allow rapid customization and high assured performance.

    Let's talk about hybrid manufacturing. As part of the NSF HAMMER Engineering Research Center activities, we are completing a project to compare combinations of additive manufacturing/wrought/forged preforms, structured light scanning, and CNC machining. We are recording the cost for each operation and then using tensile testing to measure the load-displacement data for each part up to and including fracture. We'll finally compare the process combinations based on cost and performance. The part design mimics a portion of the aerospace pickle fork, a?component that connects the wing structure, landing gear, and fuselage. The photograph shows (from left to right) wrought stainless steel, DED stainless steel, wrought aluminum, and WAAM aluminum parts. An additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) preform is shown on the left. We produced this component using our MELD Manufacturing Corporation L3 AFSD machine. The next steps are to scan and machine the preform to obtain the final geometry for testing.

    @Central Ohio innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology enthusiasts... I'm proud to announce (belatedly) that last year I started a new position with the National Science Foundation HAMMER Engineering Research Center at The Ohio State University! NSF HAMMER Engineering Research Center is bringing the same technology that enabled the CNC machining and Additive Manufacturing industries to the millenia old practice of metal working. In essence, we're bringing "robotic blacksmithing" (fancy name - "metamorphic manufacturing") to market, and thereby hope to create a novel way to make metal components, and possibly even a new industry. I'm serving as the Innovation Ecosystem Director and Industrial Liaison Officer for HAMMER. This is an exciting role where every day I get to do my favorite things: -help people make their ideas become physical reality -interface with industry, entrepreneurs, and researchers -coordinate ideation-to-market strategies -work with students and educators of all types -collaborate with a diverse community of designers / engineers / software developers / manufacturers / "makers" of all types -bring value by making cool things in novel ways For anyone who has known me as someone who has facilitated design, fabrication, innovation, and community at the Idea Foundry for the last 15+ years - this is an exciting new dimension of capability.     The global metrology industry was valued at?$10 billion to $12 billion in 2023 and is expected to increase to $15 billion to $23 billion by 2032. Metrology is the scientific study and application of measurement and forms the foundation for international trade and scientific research. It's one of my favorite topics! Would you like to learn more? Our ACE metrology program is the place to begin. The map shows the state-by-state participation in the online, no-cost metrology course. Since 3/2021, we've had 1463 online participants with a 57% completion rate. We've also had 58 in-person participants for our no-cost, 1.5 day training. The online participants include 1034 students (71%) and 429 industry professionals (29%).
