VR is the Ultimate Escape. For Some, It’s a Lifeline. Imagine being locked in a cell for 23 hours a day. No human interaction, no sun, no sense of time. Now imagine slipping on a headset and suddenly you’re in the ocean, feeling the weightlessness of water, or standing in the middle of a forest hearing birds instead of silence. That’s what’s happening in some California prisons right now. VR is giving inmates in solitary confinement a break from reality. And it’s working. Infractions drop. Aggression fades. Some prisons are even shutting down their solitary units. What's this mean? VR changes people. I know because it changed me. As a Korean American, I grew up eating Korean BBQ for breakfast. Meat was life. Then I watched a crude 360° VR film by #DxE on factory farming and wham! Quit eating meat that day. VR didn’t just show me something; it made me feel it. And that’s the thing. VR isn’t just entertainment. It’s empathy. It’s perspective. It’s escape when you need it and a gut check when you don’t. Some see this prison program as dystopian, like “the world is a prison and VR is our only way out.” I beg to differ. VR isn’t an escape from reality. It’s an expansion of it. It can pull you out of depression, loneliness, or even your own biases. We’re just scratching the surface of what it can do for mental health, rehab, and human connection. This is the kind of research I love seeing. Shoutout to #Cleanbox for bringing VR into prisons. At the core of crime and addiction is mental health, and VR has the potential to change that. We see homelessness everywhere, and I’ve done my share to help—but I’ve always wondered if VR could be part of the solution. Cleanbox’s work proves it just might be.
