NPS’ latest Joint Interagency Field Experimentation (JIFX) event supported rapid development of emerging technology applications in artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and counter-drone systems – all leadership priorities key to defense modernization and keeping the U.S. military the strongest, most lethal force in the world. Held Feb. 3-7, industry partners attending JIFX conducted experiments that address designated Critical Technology Areas for the DOD, including directed energy, trusted AI and autonomy, advanced materials, integrated sensing and cyber, operational energy generation and storage, and much more. “Several firms accomplished firsts with their systems and nearly everyone collaborated in an ad-hoc experiment or two that demonstrated their capacity to address operational challenges more effectively together,” said retired U.S. Army Col. Michael Richardson, JIFX director. A total of 18 NPS warrior-scholar students attended JIFX in support of their coursework, while also preparing for participation in Bold Machina (BOMA), an exercise with allied special operations later this year. “We need to be able to keep up with peer-to-peer competition, which means we need to get after new technology faster,” said a U.S. Navy Special Warfare operator in attendance. “We need to innovate. And that's what JIFX is, allowing collaboration to happen in a controlled environment. It's innovation at its best.” NPS Vice Provost for Research and Innovation Kevin Smith added, “The BOMA-directed study class benefited greatly from the opportunity to engage during these JIFX tests to better understand the processes by which technologies can be rapidly evaluated and accelerated for adoption, and is a great example of how JIFX fits into the NPS innovation operating concept.” ?? The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) welcomed U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Christopher Alexander, Commander, Carrier Strike Group 9 (CSG9), for a classified, post-deployment brief detailing CSG-9’s recently-completed nine-month deployment in the U.S. 3rd, 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations. Alexander’s presentation served as the keynote event in the school’s Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) Week, a biannual effort focused on providing current warfighting insight from the fleet, professional exchanges, career management, and leadership development to the nearly 100 SWO students currently attending NPS for graduate education. U.S. Navy Capt. Jeremy Gray, Surface Warfare Chair and COMNAVSURFPAC representative at NPS, noted, "Our semi-annual visits to NPS by warfighting and career-focused commands across Surface Warfare are a part of our community's commitment to and investment in our future department heads, executive officers and commanding officers. “Nearly 20 percent of all SWO department heads are NPS graduates, and these events offer a unique opportunity to positively impact a large and important part of our future community leadership,” Gray added. “NPS SWOs gained key insights enhancing their education, informing their research and SWO community initiatives to retain the best talent, and left motivated to tackle the professional challenges that await them when they return to the Fleet." In addition to the post-deployment brief, Alexander also engaged in a small group discussion focused on mentorship with NPS SWOs. Detailers from PERS-41 provided a community brief for NPS students on SWO careers, and the Surface Navy Association sponsored a SWO call in the NPS Trident Room Rose Garden. Over the three-day event, additional sessions covered surface community training, updates on relevant tactics, one-on-one discussions with detailers, and much more. With direct engagement from Naval Surface Forces, PERS-41, Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center, and Surface Warfare Schools Command, SWO Week ensures graduating students are well prepared for their follow-on tours from NPS back at sea. ? Nearly 900 NPS graduates responded to the most recent #NPSAlumni Survey, which targeted the graduating classes from years 2018, 2020 and 2024. The results of the annual survey provide valuable insights that reinforce NPS’ continuous improvement processes, getting feedback straight from our graduates who are back in the fleet, in the joint operational forces, at warfare centers and beyond. ? The NPS Office of Institutional Effectiveness conducts the survey, which consists of questions to assess the benefits of an NPS graduate education at different points in the students' careers following their NPS tour. Highlights from the latest survey include: ? ? 97 percent of the responding alumni are satisfied with their NPS experience. ? 92 percent believe their NPS experience improved their contributions to their service, agency, or department. ? 75 percent of respondents completed a utilization/payback tour, and 87 percent of those found the knowledge and skills gained from NPS relevant to their assignments. ? While essential for NPS accreditation, the survey is executed in the spirit of the Navy-wide “Get Real, Get Better” initiative to continuously improve NPS programs to meet the demands of warfighter development, and advance the combat capability of the Navy/Marine Corps team and joint force. ? Next week, the 2025 Winter Quarter class will join the ranks of NPS alumni, with 191 new graduates: 63 U.S. Navy; 25 U.S. Marine Corps; 14 U.S. Army; 10 U.S. Air Force; 52 civilians; 1 U.S. Marine Corps Reserve; 1 U.S. Navy Reserve; and 25 international graduates representing 20 countries. ? ??Learn more about the Office of Institutional Effectiveness at NPS: https://lnkd.in/gc9M8Syw ? NPS welcomed a delegation of senior representatives from the Republic of Korea’s Hanbat National University (HNU), led by HNU President Dr. Yong-Jun Oh, for an exploratory visit to the NPS campus, March 5. The HNU delegation met with senior NPS leaders and were briefed on several NPS education and research programs of interest for potential collaboration. ? “The Korean delegation is keen on establishing a mechanism for Republic of Korea (ROK) Armed Forces personnel studying at Hanbat National University to pursue their graduate degrees here at NPS, especially in the engineering sciences,” said Dr. Mowafiq Alanazi, associate director of NPS’ International Graduate Programs Office, adding the delegation expressed a strong interest in establishing a formal academic relationship. ? Retired Republic of Korea Navy Rear Adm. and Hanbat faculty member, Dr. Minsoo Yang, expressed a deep understanding of the value of an NPS graduate education to the operational forces, Alanazi said, and was instrumental in coordinating the visit from this key Indo-Pacific partner. NPS has long been part of the strong alliance between the United States and South Korea, with an impressive 300+ NPS graduates from the ROK Armed Forces; currently, 10 South Korean students are enrolled in graduate studies at the institution. ? One of those current students, Republic of Korea Navy Lt. Jin Hong Yu, briefed the HNU delegation on thesis research supporting his master’s in modeling, virtual environments and simulation. Yu’s thesis explores the impact of automated decision support tools on the cognitive workload of novice users in high-stress environments, with a focus on shipboard Damage Control scenarios in naval operations. ? In addition to current research briefs and robust discussions with NPS senior leadership, the HNU cohort expressed interest in exploring potential synergies with NPS programs in shipbuilding and engineering, space systems and artificial intelligence, all of which are key programs of study at HNU. ? ?? Marines assigned to the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) welcomed new service leadership with Col. Dana S. Demer taking the helm as NPS’ Senior Marine Corps Representative. Demer addressed the full USMC cohort during an introductory meeting on the NPS campus, Feb. 25. ? “Education has been the very foundation of my success,” said Demer, who holds multiple master’s degrees and is currently working towards a doctorate. “I wanted to remind the students that their education is a Marine Corps investment in them. ? “The Navy and Marine Corps have been successful in war due in a large part to the education, research, and innovation that occurs during the interwar period, which we are in now,” he continued. “These students are the Pete Ellises and Evans Carlsons of the future. NPS is critical to this.” ? In addition to stressing the value of their education and the students’ time here at NPS, Demer says he had two important messages to share with the USMC cohort. ? “First of all, it was my introduction to the Marines … And I want them to know that I’m here to serve them and assist them with everything from academics to career counseling,” he said. “The second theme is that I can be an example of how a unique career path can also be a successful one. I was told early on in my career that NPS could be a career ender and I want to help kill that falsehood. I’ve been blessed with a very unique career that has taken me around the world.” ? A total of 266 Marines are currently enrolled in NPS degree programs as resident students, with 42 Marines working towards their master’s via distance learning and an additional 44 Marines attending NPS in non-degree/certificate programs. ?? Envisioning the Future, Building Community, Empowering Others

We are heading to NVIDIA #GTC next week and look forward to exploring how we might create the future. The NVIDIA ecosystem is unique and offers insights across every industry, community of practice, and human endeavor. #PhysicalAI is going to transform how we experience the world. The choice is not whether the future will be created, the choice is whether we will be the architects of our own future. No one innovates alone. We have to be in community with others to learn the best practices and hard won lessons from failed attempts. Each community often imagines they they are so unique and different, that other communities have little to offer them. My experience is that it is precisely the seams where communities bump against each other that people innovate, i.e. drive the adoption of new practice in their own community. The Defense Community has been slow to adopt many of these practices. We can do better. The Naval Postgraduate School is leading the way. I look forward to seeing how other communities are addressing their concerns and leveraging the new tools and practices to explore new ways of operating. If you are heading to GTC, tell me what you think is the “must see” event, panel, or booth. If you are a member of the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation & Alumni Association community and attending the GTC, let us know by tagging us in your posts. Mike Karlbom Sanja Basari?
