?? Advancing Climate Security through Education and Research ?? Climate Security is an important aspect of national security. Rising sea levels and global temperatures, more severe and frequent droughts, floods, wildfires and extreme weather increasingly inflict devastation across the planet, impacting people and their livelihoods, infrastructure and the environment. It also impacts naval operations and readiness. Naval Postgraduate School faculty, students and partners lead and contribute to #climatesecurity education and research, equipping military and civilian leaders to address these complex threats around the globe. Recently, NPS partnered with NATO and representatives from over 19 countries to deliver climate security education to member states, enhancing collaborative approaches to this growing challenge. Among the leaders in this effort is Rebecca Grippo, a fellow of the inaugural class of the NPS-Stanford Climate Security Fellowship, who helped organize the course and presented two sessions on economics, policy and law. This partnership and the event strengthens international cooperation and underscores the need for shared strategies to safeguard our future. Read more about this vital initiative here: https://lnkd.in/gMvJzafc. Closer to home, NPS researchers are deeply engaged in analyzing the effects of #climatechange on coastal installations like Vandenberg Space Force Base. These studies provide actionable insights to protect mission-critical infrastructure and operations from rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Explore the impactful work our researchers are doing: https://lnkd.in/gbAZkxWn. By fostering innovative partnerships and advancing critical research, #NPS prepares defense leaders to meet evolving security challenges. Through our commitment to the Naval Postgraduate School's mission, the Foundation proudly supports these efforts that strengthen resilience and security across the globe. "Monterey County is home to key defense organizations, including the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC), and the U.S. Coast Guard Station, among others. Together with NPS, these institutions employ nearly 12,000 defense personnel and another 18,000 veterans who contribute both economically and socially to the region. Their presence and work deepen the connection between the military and the local community, where veterans serve as teachers, business leaders, coaches, mentors, and advocates for civic engagement." The NPS Foundation & Alumni Association is proud to support the #NPS military community both locally and abroad and to build partnerships with our local #MontereyPeninsula community. The contributions made by Naval Postgraduate School students, faculty and alumni impact not just #nationalsecurity, but also #energysecurity, #technology, and so much more. We extend our deepest gratitude for their selfless service. #VeteransDay
"Honoring Veterans: Serving Our Country and Community" ... a message from the NPS President, retired Vice Admiral Ann Rondeau: (Originally published in the Monterey Herald, November 9, 2024) Each Veterans Day, we honor the service of our fellow citizens who took an oath to defend our country. November 11th is a day to recognize veterans' contributions—both in times of war and peace—and to acknowledge their ongoing impact in our communities. Veterans’ voices continue to shape and strengthen our society, long after their military service ends. Though veterans now make up only about six percent of the U.S. population, Monterey is fortunate to have a strong and enduring veteran presence. This is in part due to the historical role of institutions in the area like the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), which started at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1909 and moved to Monterey in 1951. As President of NPS, I am privileged to work with a team of brilliant faculty and staff who develop our DOD and international student’s talent as military leaders and problem?solvers. Many are veterans who now call Monterey, home. These men and women embody the principle of "service before self," enriching the community with their families, community engagement, sense of duty, leadership, and diverse experiences. The oath we took to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” is foundational to our democracy and sets our military apart as an institution united by mission and common values. This oath continues to guide the veterans in our community and nation long after their service ends. - Continue reading the full message:?https://lnkd.in/gcKdhCGu US Navy | United States Marine Corps | US Army | United States Air Force | United States Space Force | U.S. Coast Guard #VeteransDay #Veterans

Carson holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics from University of California, Los Angeles, an M.S. in physics from San Francisco State University, and a B.S. in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She taught college physics for 20 years at a range of institutions, and worked in several areas of astrophysical research, including studies of high-redshift active galaxies at radio, rest-frame-optical, and gamma-ray wavelengths. ? As a post-doctoral researcher, she contributed to the development and science goals for the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope at Stanford’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. She has published over a dozen articles in peer-reviewed astrophysical journals and presented her research nationally and internationally. Her STEM outreach experience includes managing the Information Science Hall at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. ? Carson holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and literature from the Bennington College Writing Seminars. Her writing for a popular audience has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, Science, and Los Angeles Review of Books, among other publications. In 2020, she founded the literary organization “To the Lighthouse” where she facilitates book clubs, teaches close-reading, and hosts author events and literary retreats. She enjoys straddling the divide between science and literature, between the analytical and the affective (and is a self-declared Virginia Woolf fan). ? ?
