An unforgettable and rainy week in Washington, D.C.! Over the NPS academic break, 31 international officers and two American sponsors enjoyed exploring our nation’s capital through IGPO’s Field Studies Program. The group explored facets of American history and culture through visits to the National Mall, Mount Vernon, the Pentagon, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, Arlington National Cemetery, and several Smithsonian museums. A highlight for many was meeting with U.S. Representative and NPS alumnus, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), at the U.S. Capitol. The international officers also found the tours of the Pentagon and the U.S. Naval Academy to be once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They especially enjoyed being paired with midshipmen and fellow countrymen for lunch at the Naval Academy's King Hall. After visiting the Smithsonian African American History and Culture Museum, many expressed how impactful the exhibits were in broadening their understanding of U.S. history. The trip fostered meaningful connections and cultural exchange, with many officers appreciating the opportunity to interact with each other outside of the classroom. This experience not only broadened their perspectives but also created friendships that will last well beyond their time at NPS. #InternationalStudents #NPS #FieldStudiesProgram #USNavy #WashingtonDC #USCapital #IGPO

During his October 8th talk at the Naval Postgraduate School, NPS Foundation Advisory Council Member, the Honorable Leon Panetta, delivered a powerful message on the urgent need for leadership and innovation in national defense. Addressing a packed audience of students, faculty, staff and guests, Panetta stressed that the speed of technological change is outpacing the Department of Defense's ability to adapt. Panetta highlighted that America’s future success depends on continued investment in innovation, particularly in defense technologies like AI, which he believes could provide a decisive advantage. “We need DOD bureaucracy to move at the speed of technology,” noted Panetta. “I’m concerned that we can’t act swiftly enough to ensure our advantage by leveraging and learning about cutting edge technologies. Industry is setting the pace, and much of it is American innovation, but we need to apply innovative thinking to how we acquire, adapt and adopt technology to meet capability needs. I believe NPS and the future Naval Innovation Center at NPS are parts of the solution.” In a call to action for NPS students, Panetta added, "When you graduate, you will carry the additional obligation to do more, take risks, make hard decisions and lead solutions to complex national defense challenges if we're going to remain the world’s strongest democracy.” Panetta’s remarks highlight the essential role that innovation and strong leadership play in shaping the future of national security. As a proud partner to NPS and the Naval Innovation Center at NPS the Foundation remains committed to supporting cutting-edge research and fostering the next generation of defense leaders. The final day of the Naval Postgraduate School’s European International Alumni Symposium reinforced the need for our collective collaboration as allies and partners dedicated to global security and prosperity. Symposium participants and spouses gathered at the Bayernhalle in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Oct. 2 for the official dinner and Distinguished Alumni Ceremony hosted by the NPS Foundation & Alumni Association. We had the added honor of recognizing the foundational role of the spouses to this community. During the event, Adm. Stuart B. Munsch, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet; Commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples, highlighted the complex security landscape across Europe and the Middle East noting that it was “important that we recognize the circumstances we are in” and recognize the value of our defense education institutes in the face of those circumstances. "It's the network of like-minded individuals who are products of those educational institutions and working for those nations that form the strongest bonds,” he added. "There is tremendous power in these networks. ... I encourage you as alumni to strengthen your alumni network, advance those relationships that you build here. ... We really need everything we can build together in the face of today's landscape." ?
