When then-White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford was asked on a trip to France if French food was the best, she gave a fittingly diplomatic answer: Our chefs may be classically trained, like a good pianist, but in America "we play jazz." Speaking with? All Things Considered?host Ari Shapiro after stepping down as the top White House chef recently, Comerford said America is land of migrants who all bring their own eclectic flair to food. After a long day in the Oval Office, what does a tired president want to eat? Recently retired White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford has the answer. Speaking with? All Things Considered?host Ari Shapiro, Comerford said one of the tasks in her nearly 30 years at the White House was reading the room — and the news — to understand what mood the president was going to be in when they came home for dinner. At the end of the day, sometimes a grilled cheese and tomato soup was necessary. Listen to the full interview on NPR.org.

Bank of America is pledging to pay tellers and other hourly workers at least $24 per hour?starting in October —?in part due to the difficulty of attracting employees to the roles. The company has been raising wages relatively aggressively for its hourly workers since?early 2019. And it's not alone. Yet this pay increase also underscores the vast income disparities in the financial industry: The median Bank of America employee made $124,000 in 2023, and the CEO?made?230 times that.
