Women’s History Month Spotlight: Shirley Overton Meet Shirley, Payroll Lead and Support at NPL Great Lakes since 1998. She manages union payroll for multiple unions and has played a key role in the Great Lakes region’s growth—from 60 employees to over 1,000 across Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Shirley’s leadership skills were shaped through years of ministry work before joining NPL. Throughout her tenure with NPL, she has supported management and field employees in AR, AP, P-Cards, Payroll, and Office Management. Her dedication and passion have impacted many, and we’re proud to have her on our team!

Safety is at the core of everything we do. That’s why NPL was pleased to represent at the Missouri Common Ground Alliance (MOCGA) Damage Prevention and Excavation Safety Summit in Springfield, Missouri. The national event features classes, demonstrations, vendors, and an operator’s rodeo, all with the aim of helping prevent jobsite incidents, injuries and underground utility damages. For our part, NPL had a booth highlighting what the team does and the services we provide. Attending events like this one are mutually beneficially- allowing our teams to learn, network and promote safety. We also met other municipalities and vendors that may become future partners.

NPL is focused on a culture of continuous improvement and learning. That’s why foreman and key lead personnel from the NPL Naperville office participated in comprehensive, week-long training led by internal subject matter experts in operations, quality, and safety. The program also featured guest speakers, including customer Quality Assurance management, construction risk management, and safety staff, as well as local One-Call managers, OSHA representatives, and certified trainers from a local pipeline coating manufacturer. Training topics covered a wide range of critical areas, such as coating application and inspection, CPR/First Aid, best practices for a utility commission audit, damage prevention, vehicle maintenance, job preparedness, and cross-bore prevention, among others. At the end of the training, participants completed a feedback survey, which received overwhelmingly positive responses. We appreciate our team’s commitment to safety and quality!
