She’d be going to the Colorado State Capitol to testify in favor of?SCR-001, a measure that could open the door for more childhood abuse survivors to sue perpetrators and the organizations that employed them.? The measure aims to?change the civil statute of limitations for childhood sex abuse, allowing people to sue over allegations from the 1990s and earlier. Yesterday we shared a post from Criminal Defense attorney Erin Bailey - talking about why she doesn't allow her children to do sleepovers, based on the statistics we know with regards to CSA. That would be- as a reminder, that 1 out of every 4 little girls will be sexually abused before the age of 18, and 93% of them by someone that they know and/or that their family knows and trusts. Legions of comments came in on that video blasting the attorney for being a "real downer of a parent" and not "letting her kids be kids" etc. If this local news piece doesn't showcase the REAL and every day danger facing young girls (and of course boys, but at Now She's Safe we are focused on the higher preponderance of assault on females), I don't know what does. A 5-year old little girl assaulted by a grown man who was living with the girl's mother and her boyfriend. This post on Tiktok from Criminal Defense attorney Erin Bailey is clearly ruffling some feathers, but that's bound to happen when you suggest controversial approaches to address an even more 'controversial' topic. She's explaining why she doesn't allow sleepovers for her own children, due to what she knows about childhood sexual abuse statistics-- that being that (in the case of females) #1in4 young girls are sexually abused before the age of 18 and 93% of them BY SOMEONE THEY KNOW AND TRUST. Not many families are thinking, understandably, about the possibility that - at a sleepover, an older brother or an uncle or aunt or grandparent could be the person who makes the compulsive move on an innocent victim. When we are talking about childhood sexual abuse, we AREN'T talking about rare occurrences. We are talking about approximately 47 MILLION victims on the female side every year. "I'm not ready": Survivors of child sex abuse ask for more time to file civil lawsuits. Considering the fact that the average age for a victim to finally feel comfortable disclosing childhood abuse is 52.....these statute of limitations at the state levels are designed to protect the abusers and hurt the victims. Sister reveals childhood abuse at hands of Labor staffer brother, Kent Rowe “Years later when I confronted him he would make me feel as though it had been equally my fault, as though we were equal players who had done this thing and had this shared history together.” This is a very disturbing and yet - very common story--of older sibling sexual abuse. In fact, older brother to younger sister sexual abuse is now the most commonly reported sexual abuse. The victim is often too scared to speak up for fear that the parents won't believe her and/or for fear that she is a participant. This is why more conversations need to be happening within the family unit on these matters so that the moment inappropriate touching begins, the victim understands this is not right and to flee. And ideally, to tell someone.
