La Nacion, a respected Argentine newspaper, has featured our journey, that of my girlfriend Caroline and me, into the world of wildlife conservation. The article explores our personal path, driven by a deep passion for protecting endangered species in some of the world's most remote and breathtaking landscapes. It's more than just our story; it's an invitation. We hope to encourage everyone, regardless of their background or profession, to realize their potential in preserving our planet's precious biodiversity. Conservation requires passion and dedication, not just degrees. A big thanks to Franco Spinetta for his fantastic work on this interview.

In my final days in Kyrgyzstan, after nearly six years, I met incredible people who filled me with hope. As I prepared to leave for a new conservation adventure in Argentina, my partner Caroline surprised me with a visit to the NABU Rehabilitation Centre. Thanks to our years of volunteering at Baiboosun Nature Reserve, the NABU team in Kyrgyzstan welcomed us warmly. The centre was impressive, with facilities for two majestic snow leopards, a beautiful lynx, a friendly wolf, and various bird species. As a passionate photographer, I proposed documenting the team’s work in exchange for a longer stay. They accepted, and I was thrilled. Having worked with snow leopards for three years and encountering one in the wild in the Tien-Shan mountains, I couldn’t wait to observe them up close again. I was overjoyed to learn that one of my photos of beautiful Kalushka, taken during my time at the centre, was used for NABU’s communication. It’s fulfilling to see my efforts appreciated and to build what I hope will be a lasting partnership with those who understand the challenges and importance of protecting the invisible—those creatures inhabiting a hidden world of balance and perfection, far from our everyday lives, yet requiring immense effort and determination to safeguard. ● EFFICIENCY OVER TRENDS: RETHINKING INNOVATION IN WILDLIFE CONSERVATION Innovation isn't always about following the latest trends. It can also mean revisiting effective traditional methods, posing the right questions to a team, or integrating ideas from different fields to achieve the best outcomes. It's about exploring various paths and discovering creative solutions that may not always be trendy but can significantly improve progress and effectiveness in wildlife conservation. Coming from the art+tech scene and being a maker myself, I've always believed that technology should serve a purpose in providing real improvements over other options. However, my experience in independent conservation efforts has shown me some flaws in the current model of donor-dependent projects when deploying tech to the front-line. Here's a summary of what I've observed in the past years working independently in the Tien-Shan mountains to find new modern effective ways of prioritizing the needs of wildlife: 1. Technology is often given to rangers or community-based reserves without proper oversight on what's best suited for the task or habitat. 2. Each project/organization buys its own tech, leading to an unsustainable system where resources cannot be shared or repurposed across different projects/organizations. 3. Lack of maintenance plans leads to short-lived tech. 4. Local teams lack knowledge and repairability skills. 5. Technical assistance and training are lacking real efficiency, these practices are often just used as marketing strategies from NGOs. 6. Over-scaled deployments could result in inefficient use of resources. 7. Dead tech accumulates in storage and is not discarded properly (batteries, chargers, etc). 8. Sometimes, rangers get the same equipment from different projects, wasting resources. Being able to repurpose tech over different projects would be already a big improvement over the current donor-dependent model that lacks efficiency and can lead to misuse of resources. And also providing alternatives to mitigate corruption within the sector, particularly concerning the substantial budgets allocated for camera trap deployment and batteries in remote areas. These resources often become difficult to monitor. I'd like to hear your thoughts, especially from those who work with technology. While we are skilled at building our own solutions, we need better ways to manage mainstream tech efficiently for conservation projects in remote landscapes. I talk about innovation in the Now for Wildlife website. Imagine a world without wildlife, it would resemble an open sky supermarket, a dull place stripped of the vibrancy, joy and diversity that nature provides. Picture a realm where everything is crafted by humans, filled with human artifacts and nature only serves as a picturesque backdrop, existing solely to cater to human needs and desires. In this stark reality, we would be oblivious to the absence of the mythical creatures that maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystem we rely on. Our spiritual mentors, who have guided us through the rhythms of nature, would be gone, dismissed and devalued in the pursuit of our luxuries. To appreciate something beyond our comprehension requires a heightened spiritual development, explaining why, collectively, we often fail to value nature. It's not a consequence of indifference but stems from a personal lack of connection and the failure to create the circumstances for meaningful experiences to unfold. This reality has been evident to me since I began my journey in wildlife conservation. It's an often overlooked truth that lies at the heart of the challenges we face when trying to protect nature. I talk about the spiritual challenge of valuing something outside of the human context in the Now for Wildlife website: nowforwildlife.org You might find this audio chapter interesting: ● BEYOND HUMAN CONTEXT: THE SPIRITUAL CHALLENGE OF PROTECTING THE INVISIBLE.
