For Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, we’re honored to highlight the incredible generosity of Cory Reed with J&A Service. In partnership with KB Titan Racing, they’re making a profound difference for children battling cancer in our pediatric oncology & hematology clinic at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital. This mission is especially personal for Cory Reed, a professional drag racer with the NHRA, as his son, Theodore Reed, was diagnosed with leukemia at just two years old. The care and support they’ve received during their journey have inspired them to give back to families facing similar challenges. Through his efforts, with J&A Service and KB Titan Racing, they’re helping bring comfort and joy to these brave children with toys, food, blankets, and more. Last week, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation came together in honor of our incredible Live Oak and Visionaries in Health philanthropic partners to celebrate and share how impactful their support is for those who live in the communities we serve. These partnerships have supported: ?? Advancing clinical care with left ventricular assist device (LVAD) surgeries, new atrial fibrillation (AFIB) treatment options, and expanding cardiac rehab care ?? Meeting patients where they are with two community care cruisers and 3D mobile mammogram unit ?? Bringing care to homes through the Hospital at Home program, which allows patients to recover at home while receiving 24-hour care and immediate assistance if needed ?? Expanding access to care with the opening of one Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic and construction on second clinic underway ???? Providing 42 Upward Mobility Educational Awards to team members working to become RN’s We're in awe of how deeply our members of the Live Oak Society care for those in their areas. Our dedicated members of the Women’s Council, a group of philanthropy partners who have been supporting women’s health needs in Winston-Salem for over 16 years, recently gathered to explore new areas of support for their 2025 philanthropy project of the year. Each year, the Women’s Council philanthropy project is determined through membership voting, ensuring that dollars raised support the projects of greatest importance to council members. Last year, thanks to their collective giving and generosity, we introduced a high-risk maternity patient navigator, providing crucial assistance for expectant mothers in the area. This year, Women’s Council has been busy raising funds for a new ultrasound machine, which supports patients receiving care at Novant Health Today’s Woman OB/GYN, located in Winston-Salem’s historically Black Boston-Thurmond community. After today’s gathering, members will vote on which philanthropy project they want to support in 2025! Earlier today,?we held the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the expansion of the St. Jude Affiliate Clinic at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital.?Through this renovation and expansion our patients will be transported from the Amazon to the Arctic surrounded by our expert team of clinicians. The newly opened space will allow us to better support our research team, in partnership with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, give us space to host multidisciplinary clinics and create space for even our sickest patients to still experience the joy of childhood. Earlier this week, we celebrated an awe-inspiring 25 years (!) of patient support through the Novant Health Kemp Bessant Support Center. That’s 25 years of our philanthropic community and team members providing services to those in our community as they traverse their personal cancer journey or the journey of a loved one. As care teams offer compassionate care and a helping hand for patients and patient families during some of their most challenging times, our sincere gratitude for what our partners make possible through philanthropy continues to grow. Over the past six years alone, well over 2,300 lives have been impacted by you, our philanthropic partners. Because of your meaningful giving, you have provided access to counseling services, case management sessions, medication assistance and special care items including wigs from our lending boutique through Novant Health Foundation to Novant Health patients. Your generosity makes a tangible difference in the lives of every person who steps through the doors of the Kemp Bessant Support Center. Tiffany Young, supervisor of Psychosocial Oncology for Novant Health Cancer Institute, Kemp Bessant Support Center, summarized the work of the center perfectly: “Along with advances in cancer treatment, Novant Health Kemp Bessant Support Center has evolved in our approach to providing psychosocial oncology care. A genuine passion to improve the experience of individuals whose lives have been changed by cancer is what guides our work. The endorsement of Novant Health’s leadership drives us to develop specialized programming, counseling, and case management. There is power in being surrounded by a remarkable team of people who care deeply about you as a person, not a statistic. That’s what Ellyn learned after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After she experienced healthcare that left a lot to be desired on the west coast, she and her husband traveled cross-country to find the right support for her and ended up in at the Novant Health Weisiger Cancer Institute in Charlotte. What she found was intense gratitude for how important having a full team was for her complex case. Her care team includes pharmacists, nutritionists, therapists, oncologists, a cardiologist, and an oncological breast surgeon, just to name a few. Part of what makes the Breast Care Center in Charlotte so special is that it is truly an integrative facility, fusing research and cutting-edge technology with emotional and holistic approaches to cancer care. When Ellyn became a regular at Novant Health’s Cancer Wellness Center, she said she “learned more than (she) ever thought possible about nutrition and exercise.” The Wellness Center and Integrative Medicine gave her “the mental, psychological and spiritual piece that was missing. They’re completely grant-funded, so you can exercise, attend nutrition and art classes, be part of drum circles – and it’s entirely free for three months.” That’s the power of philanthropy - it gives people access to the tools they need to navigate the ins and outs of their cancer journey. Through philanthropy, Novant Health is able to offer lifesaving care to more patients like Ellyn. We want to extend a special thank you to Martin Truex, Jr., Agnes B. and Edward I. National Grateful Patient Day gives us a special day each year to pause and take a moment to share our appreciation for those in the medical industry, and to express gratitude toward the families and caregivers of anyone receiving life-saving care. At Novant Health Foundation, we’ve seen firsthand the profound impact that gratitude can have on our care teams. Thanks to Melissa, we’re able to bridge the gap between patients and the caregivers who make a difference in their lives every day. Melissa Thompson is a dedicated foundation team member committed to connecting patient gratitude back to the team members who provided care that stood out as above and beyond. Last month, patient Scott Pope?gave to support patients and team members at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center in honor of Melissa, and recognized her as a Guardian Angel- as someone who shows outstanding levels of compassion, has gone above and beyond, and has had a profound impact on the lives of both Novant Health patients and caregivers. At the award ceremony, Scott shared that, “If you look up Compassion in the dictionary, it explains Melissa." We couldn’t agree more. Melissa has connected more than 150 grateful patients back to the team members and care teams they wanted to thank and recognize. These connections not only brighten the days of our care teams but also strengthen the bond between our patients and those who have provided them with compassionate, life-changing care. Today, we are celebrating a step forward and a step up for the Davidson County community - we've broken ground for the new Novant Health Wellness & Education Thomasville. It is well known that our physical space and surroundings have an impact on our well-being, and we know this modern facility will support the people of Davidson county by providing wellness and education services for individuals with chronic health conditions, mental health or substance misuse needs, and offering rehabilitation and nutrition counseling. “Our goal with this new wellness and education building is to connect with our patients sooner to help them lead healthier lives. The team, in partnership with the patient and their primary care provider, will focus on the prevention and management of complex medical conditions before they have a chance to worsen and require more advanced hospital-based care,” said Jon Applebaum, president and chief operating officer of Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center. Opening in Spring 2025, this renovated new space was made possible thanks to the generosity of 300 donors through Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center Foundation, which provided $2 million in philanthropic support toward the project.
