The electric vehicle (EV) industry is accelerating, but a fundamental challenge remains; their batteries. These powerhouses that propel the vehicles are also the same component that often holds back the proliferation of EVs. How so? When you look at electric vehicles, they stand up to vehicles with traditional engines. Most have curb appeal and are comfortable, and they are outfitted with the latest driver assistance and safety features. However, slow-ish charging speeds, limited charging infrastructure, and concerns about the lifespan of batteries make many consumers wary. For EVs to dominate the market, batteries have to achieve three critical goals: reliability, longevity, and efficiency. Innovative diagnostic tools offer the promise of realizing these goals and large firms like Infineon are working on power management ICs and BMS systems to accomplish these goals. We’re also seeing innovation from pioneering startups like @Nova Semiconductor I first profiled Nova in the spring when CEO Ahmad Ashrafzadeh announced they’d developed the world’s most efficient battery management system for multi-cell devices. What sets their solution apart is that, unlike most competitors that use one or two ADCs and time multiplexing to measure up to 16–18 cells, Nova uses one dedicated ADC per cell. With this approach, the accuracy of the measurement is improved and by enabling ultra-precise monitoring of a battery’s state of charge, state of health, and remaining useful life, Nova’s technology empowers OEMs to extend battery lifespans and optimize resource allocation. Why does this matter? Because every gain in battery efficiency translates to real-world impact: longer driving ranges, fewer premature failures, and ultimately, a reduced environmental footprint. That last advantage also aligns with one of Nova’s core values, which is that millions of batteries - from consumer devices to EVs - can avoid landfills each year as BMS improves. Behind every leap in battery technology is a team of engineers and researchers who made it possible. But as the technology advances, competition for this talent increases and as I mentioned in a post last week, semiconductor companies working on power ICs face a multifaceted challenge: attracting engineers who are not only experts in electrical engineering and the physics of newer substrates like GaN and SiC, but who also understand system-level integration and emerging AI-driven diagnostic tools. Companies need to reimagine how they recruit and retain talent. Proactively partnering with universities and research institutions is one approach to pipelining, and exploring unconventional sources of talent, such as adjacent industries like aerospace or renewable energy is another. Those who invest in innovative recruitment strategies will be the ones to lead this transformative sector while those who don’t risk getting left behind at the pump (or charging station!) #semiconductorindustry #batterymanagement #powermanagement
