Today's site spotlight is Mission of Mary Cooperative in Dayton, Ohio! Mission of Mary is an urban farm in the Twin Towers neighborhood in Dayton, Ohio. They provide opportunities for the local neighbors to work and volunteer with the farm program. NDMV members support food security initiatives by providing environmental stewardship classes and farm work programs and by coordinating food distribution services. So far this year, NDMV members in Ohio have helped distribute 15,395 pounds of food and assisted 5,951 individuals with food security projects. It's Meet the Team Tuesday! Meet Ogeyi Akuma-Ukpo, NDMV's Human Resources and Finances Coordinator Best at: Organizing and Planning. I am good at paying close attention to detail, whether it's a birthday surprise party, remembering important days to make someone feel special, or anything work-related. I’ve discovered that organizing and planning free my mind from worrying or panicking. Worst at: DIY projects. Whether it is starting a DIY project from scratch, or doing it manually, I think it's very stressful. I can attempt to try, but I don’t think it will be done properly. I like to be creative in other ways, but when it comes to setting up a chair or a table…no. Passionate about: Exploring. I like experiencing new places, cultures, and foods. I like to read about where I’m going before I visit to feel more connected to a new place. What’s your “why”? People say they leave a place better than when they found it. Natalie Ross experienced the sweet fruit of watching seeds of purpose grow into a life of service. Through NDMV, an AmeriCorps program, she served at Mission of Mary Cooperative, a nonprofit organization that works on food justice issues on the inner east side of Dayton. They distribute fresh, locally grown produce to their community of various income levels. They also run nutrition and gardening education programs and a CSA that provides healthy food at affordable prices to the community. “MMC had a full-time farmer position opening and hired me at the end of my service year,” Natalie said. She’s advocating for future NDMV members to have an opportunity to have a year of service at MMC as well. Service is FUN! Kerry and Erin, NDMV staff, celebrated AmeriCorps week by serving in their community at Project Share, a food bank and Farmstand in Carlisle, PA. The farmstand is open to the community a few days a week and has no income eligibility requirements. Clients can pick from fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, and bread each week. Kerry and Erin helped the clients pick produce and educated them on ways to cook the different food items they selected. Tina Colaric is an NDMV member who is serving as an education assistant in Dayton, Ohio, at Five Rivers MetroParks! She used her creative talents to help design a display that will be used to teach about Ohio's wildlife history. NDMV members at Five Rivers MetroParks work alongside volunteers to coordinate animal care for the Wildlife Ambassadors Program and support educational programs for schools. They bring animals into classrooms to discuss the park's mission and educate students about wildlife. So far this year, NDMV members in Ohio have assisted 2,600 K-12 students through high-impact tutoring programs. It's Meet the Team Tuesday! Get to know Gina Bermingham, NDMV's East Regional Program Manager. Best at: Holding people accountable. I have high expectations of others and myself. I’ll give people the support they need to reach those expectations. Worst at: Self-promotion and networking. Oddly, I often coach other people in these things, but it is still a constant struggle for myself. Passionate about: From teaching self-defense classes to co-leading a Girl Scout troop, I love empowering young people. I also love animals, especially sloths, and caring for the environment. What's your “why”?: As a kid, I never had any aspirations other than doing something to help people. That's what I was made to do.
