In 1842, a visionary French priest immigrated to the United States, finding his place in the world and opening the doors of his young university to it. His destination then, like the hundreds of thousands that have followed his lead—including nearly 37,000 international students—was South Bend, Indiana. It is where we begin our journey, today. We are Notre Dame Global. Stewards of the University of Notre Dame’s enduring commitment to global scholarship, we ensure the essence of this place extends to every corner of the world, serving as a powerful influence for others to join us in partnership and in solidarity that serves the common good. Supporting Notre Dame in its pursuit of being the leading global Catholic research university, on par with but distinct from the world’s best private universities, Notre Dame Global spans five continents, with active, externally-funded research projects in more than 60 countries, just as many study abroad programs, an ever-growing international student population and global alumni base, and a network of 12 Notre Dame intellectual sites in 10 countries. Through the work of our local and global students, faculty, researchers, and friends the true spirit of this venerable institution—the relentless pursuit of truth, wherever it leads—comes to life in integrative learning experiences that develop global competencies and cultural understanding; collaborative and influential global research that changes lives; thoughtful partnerships that produce transformative engagement; and an inclusive team of global professionals that support it all. The time to engage the world is now. The place is up to you. Join our Notre Dame family, as we put living at the center of learning, and learning at the center of life, gathering the best and brightest of our world, for the betterment of our planet, its people, and the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame Global—Where Notre Dame meets the world and the world meets Notre Dame.

Dean G. Marcus Cole led an engaging fireside chat with Justice Luís Roberto Barroso at the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil yesterday. Justice Barroso is the president of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, as well as a Brazilian law professor and jurist. Their conversation centered on "Democracy, Fundamental Rights, and the Role of Supreme Courts.” Their conversation covered a wide range of critical topics, including methods of constitutional interpretation, the relationship between faith, reason, and law, and the connection between politics and adjudication at apex courts. Justice Barroso also reflected on his educational and professional journey, and shared his perspectives on the political question doctrine and the distinct responsibility he has in making major decisions that shape public life—from gender equality to Indigenous land rights. He also discussed the differences between the Brazilian civil law system and the American common law system, as well as his efforts to combat crime, hate, and threats to democracy. In discussing freedom of expression in Brazil, he underscored the challenges of balancing legal principles with societal needs in a rapidly evolving landscape. They also spoke about the dynamic relationship between faith, reason, and law. Dean Cole described Notre Dame Law School as a “place where we honor the intersection of faith and reason.” Justice Barroso gave insight into the importance of faith in his life, and shared that he deeply respects faith, religious communities, and the principle of tolerance. The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil will release a recording of this conversation at a later date. Stay tuned!

On a recent intercultural encounter in Rome, students from the University of Notre Dame, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University gathered to learn more about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The student trip, which built upon a Notre Dame class and a related Notre Dame Forum Series, “Israel, Palestine, and What We Owe Each Other" emphasized understanding narratives, pursuing respectful dialogue and developing a deeper understanding of people who hold different perspectives. In this way, it built upon Notre Dame’s larger focus on civil dialogue and the empathetic, people-first approach it has taken to teaching and learning about the conflict. Panama is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world and one of the few countries that is carbon negative. Recognizing the great opportunity this country brings for students interested in sustainability, Notre Dame Global introduced a new summer study abroad program in Panama last year. Due to its success, it will once again be offered this summer. According to ND Economics Professor Eva Dziadula, who teaches the course in Panama, it's a “perfect setting to study sustainable tourism.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gr7KSdQk
