Notes for Notes? Sonic Statement: There will be a future where all youth who desire to experience producing music will have the opportunity. There will be no barriers to what, how, why or when they create the music they desire. Music will be the catalyst that helps them discover an identity and a path. Notes for Notes? (N4N) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that designs, equips, and staffs after-school recording studios inside Boys & Girls Clubs and youth serving facilities across the United States offering youth ages 6 to 18 the opportunity to explore, create, and record music for FREE. N4N Studios are packed with professional instruments – guitars, basses, drums, keyboards/synths – and equipment – DJ gear, digital music workstations – and full recording facilities. Beyond providing access to equipment and resources, we educate youth about careers both on the stage and behind the scenes. N4N was founded on the core belief that music is the universal language of humankind, with the power to transcend virtually any cultural, racial, or socioeconomic barrier. At the heart of the organization is a dedication to the relationships formed through music. N4N makes a point NOT to censor lyrics as it is the freedom of expression and respect for the creativity of others that drives an open environment in the studio. Music inspires connection and collaboration, and it is through these relationships that we can make the most impact. The N4N team is working hard to raise financial support for their programs and to foster community awareness of the opportunities music can create in promoting positive change in the lives of youth. Our youth and producers nationwide did an INCREDIBLE job on this year's Black History Month Project! We covered so much ground this year. It travels all the way back to Spirituals like "Ride the Chariot" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing", features readings of iconic Black poems by authors like Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou, gives us original Chicago Blues, covers legendary Jazz standards like Ella Fitzgerald's "Misty", samples J Dilla, The Roots, MC Hammer, Michael Jackson, Nina Simone and Bob Marley, and tells the story of Black pride and culture through the profound lyrics of our youth artists in a way that only Hip Hop can. Beyond the Instrument has been so impactful for everyone. It’s Beyond Words!????????
That’s a wrap for this year’s Beyond the Instrument.???? ? Kicking things off in LA, we visited the Notes for Notes recording studio where the Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club members performed original work in front of special guests Laurentia Editha, Camilo Forero, Adam Schiff, Jacob Shea, Dahi, Theron Thomas, DIXSON and Tyler Cole. Bravo to all! ? The next week in the U.K., Schak performed live and led a workshop for the students of Walker Riverside Academy. A donation of equipment and instruments was also gifted to the school, enabling students to learn DJ, production and engineering skills for years to come. ? A huge thank you to all our artists and partners for your support. #SMGImpact?
