Congratulations to our partners at the Norwalk Mentor Program, which was recently honored at The Governor’s Prevention Partnership with the Champion for Youth Impact Award! Currently, the Norwalk Mentor Program serves 412 K-12 students in Norwalk Public Schools. The program stands out for its long-term mentorship, pairing students with mentors until graduation and providing scholarships for further education. Mentors, including elected officials, educators and local professionals, meet weekly with their mentees during school hours. Long-time mentors Greg Burnett, a Norwalk Common Council member, and Dr. Robin Gredinger, Social Worker in Residence with Norwalk Public Schools, joined Jasmine Prezzie, Director of the Norwalk Mentor Program and a Norwalk Board of Education member, to celebrate the award at The Governor’s Prevention Partnership 35th Anniversary Party. The Norwalk Mentor Program was founded in 1986 by Dr. Susan Weinberger and is now operated by the Human Services Council. Since the program’s inception, it has fostered thousands of youth-mentor matches over its 38-year history. Collaborating with The Governor’s Prevention Partnership for recruitment and training, the program uniquely connects students with guidance and support throughout their educational journey. Superintendent Dr. Estrella traveled around Norwalk on Monday, welcoming students back at many of our schools for the First Day of School. She’s filled with excitement and optimism for the new year, her fifth as the superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools.
Here we are again! Another first day of school. Not just any old first day, might I add, it was an INCREDIBLE first day here at Norwalk Public Schools as we celebrate the opening of the academic year! I have always loved the first day of school - whether it be as a student, as a teacher, or as an administrator. Ride along with me (virtually!) as I visited a handful of our schools on the very first day. All of our teachers and staff were incredibly excited to see our scholars back in the halls and in the classroom we are all excited to open a new chapter at Norwalk Public Schools. This clean slate provides us an opportunity for new beginnings and a benchmark to progress forward from.

Our teachers from Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School and the Norwalk Early Childhood Center spent the first day back for teachers building connections, collaborating, communicating and critically thinking, which will be a major focus for our scholars this year as the district implements its new Portrait of a Graduate initiative. Teacher teams were given one package of balloons (not inflated), one roll of masking tape, and 20 minutes to build the tallest tower they could. Team members had to strategize a plan, communicate effectively and work together to win. Congratulations to the Yellow Team who built the tallest, free-standing structure that stayed up!
