The only way we are going to reimagine and transform education in America is to design and build innovative learning spaces based on ideas from those ancient and wise ones who came before, and those who are laying the cornerstones of good ancestry today. Such is the case with Bryan Byerlee and Heather Breton in Rhode Island, who partnered with Nathan Strenge at Fielding International to build Garden City Elementary, a massively creative answer to What could school be? and a testament to "cathedral thinking."

Design shapes our autonomy in profound ways. Every interface, space, and system we interact with either expands or constrains our choices, often invisibly. Good design empowers us by revealing possibilities rather than dictating paths. It provides frameworks for decision-making without predetermining outcomes. Consider how a well-design park offers multiple routes and activities while maintaining a cohesive experience. Paradoxically, thoughtful constraints can enhance freedom. By eliminating excessive options and noise, design can focus attention on meaningful choices. The minimalist workspace removes distractions to deepen focus; a carefully curated menu makes dining more enjoyable than an endless list of options. Encouraging this level of decision-making and autonomy can be done by incorporating the purpose of several pieces, into one. The most effective design acknowledges this responsibility: to create environments that respect human agency while providing structure for meaningful action. Enter – FlipOtt. One common pitfall of the educational furnishings industry, is that designs are influenced by adults outside of the education system with primarily aesthetic influence. NorvaNivel is attempting to change that narrative by using facilitator/learner influenced, research-based designs. 1,500 Yes, 1,500 – that is the number. The number of decisions educators make in a day. According to EdWeek, “That number, which equates to about three decisions per minute in an 8-hour work day, is based on research that was conducted in the 1980’s 1990’s, but is still widely cited in education circles today.” ... Leonard Mlodinow, known for his world-renown text: Subliminal, released Emotional: How Feelings Shape Our Thinking. Each one of these 1,500 decisions would not be made possible without emotions…feelings. Connecting this insight to the world of education – what can we now ask regarding the emotional state of our learners?
