Only a few more weeks left until we open "Artists' Jewelry: From Cubism to Pop, the Diane Venet Collection" ???? This exhibition looks at the jewelry made by artists and how the process of making jewelry reveals a lot about their creative expression. It will also position pieces of jewelry from the Diane Venet Collection with works by the same artists' from the Norton's Collection. You'll be able to draw comparisons between the artists' signature mediums and their forays in jewelry. For instance, you can see this brooch by Niki de Saint Phalle in dialogue with her much larger sculpture. The whimsical "Nana Ange (Angel Nana)" brooch has clear similarities to the larger "Nana" sculpture. One, however, is small enough to pin onto a blouse and made of 18-karat yellow gold and multi-color enamel with diamond pavé, while the other is about four and a half feet tall and made from painted plaster. See these works in "Artists' Jewelry," opening at the Norton on April 12! Both works by Niki de Saint Phalle (French, 1930 – 2002) [1] "Nana Ange (Angel Nana)," 1991, Brooch, 18-karat yellow gold and multi-color enamel with diamond pavé, Edition 7 of 20, 2 x 2 1/2 in. (5.1 x 6.3 cm), Diane Venet Collection, ? 2025 Niki Charitable Art Foundation / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris [2] "Nana," 1995, Painted plaster on black metal base, 54 x 38 x 19 in. (137.2 x 96.5 x 48.3 cm), Base: 33 3/8 x 23 x 1 1/4 in. (84.8 x 58.4 x 3.2 cm), Gift of Joan and Richard Barovick, 2016.258, ? 2025 Niki Charitable Art Foundation / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris

  • As we celebrate Women's History Month, we wanted to spotlight some of the female artists in our Collection. Next up: Pae White. Pae White is a multimedia artist whose work typically plays with representing the everyday facets of life in a larger-than-life manner. Her practice often aims to subvert expected relationships betweeen her viewers and the familiar. White's 40-foot tapestry, called "Eikón," hangs in our Ruth and Carl Shapiro Great Hall. This site-specific work was commissioned by the Norton in 2018 when our building was expanded. Since it hangs across from the window that looks out on our banyan tree, White created this work with the tree in mind. The tapestry has the look of crumpled aluminum, with hints of green as if light were reflecting off of the tree outside. The title of the work, "Eikón," literally means "likeness" or "representation" in Greek, suggesting that the work itself is an image of the tree. See this work during your next visit to the Norton! Pae White (American, born 1963), "Eikón," 2018, Cotton, polyester, and Trevira, 179 15/16 x 479 15/16 in. (457 x 1219 cm), Purchase, R. H.?Norton Trust, 2020.2

  • We are saddened to hear of the passing of Fred Eversley, who turned his training in engineering into artwork in the Light and Space movement in the 1970s. Eversley's abstract work was often created from cast resin, his most common form being parabolas that distort and reflect the world around them. His largest public work of art, titled "PORTALS," was unveiled in downtown West Palm Beach at the Julian Abele Park last year. His absence will be felt throughout the art world and by those who were touched by his work. Photo of Fred Eversley by Christopher Garcia Valle/Art in America

  • Would you have guessed that Pablo Picasso made this tiny charm? ???? This emblematic pendant will be on view in "Artists' Jewelry: From Cubism to Pop, the Diane Venet Collection," which opens soon! Though it is less than 5 inches in size at its largest point, this work has some clear markers of Picasso's artistic style. As this exhibition places some of the jewelry pieces in conversation with works from the Norton's Collection, you'll be able to see parallels between the artists' work in the medium of jewelry versus their larger practice. For instance, Picasso's "Chope Visage (Mug Face)," 1959, will be on view with his pendant, "Le Grand Faune," 1973. "Artists' Jewelry" opens on April 12. You're sure to love this dazzling exhibition! Both Works by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881 – 1973) [1] "Le Grand Faune," 1973, Pendant, 23-karat gold, Edition 3 of 20, Fran?ios Hugo, 3 3/8 x 4 3/4 in. • We're celebrating Women's History Month, and we wanted to spotlight a few female artists on view in the Norton's Collection! Next up: Jennifer Bartlett, whose birthday is today! The American artist and novelist was born #OnThisDay in 1941. Her practice combined elements of figurative, representational art with the abstract. Bartlett's "Waterlilies-Crude Foyer" is currently on view at the Norton. A painted wood table and steel cone sit in front of the canvas, which mirrors the scene in flames. These elements are repositioned and reimagined in conversation between the flat plane of a painting and the sculptural objects. Part of Bartlett's "Fire Paintings" series, the flame-filled scene in the oil painting is juxtaposed with the quiet stillness of the three-dimensional sculpture. See this work during your next visit to the Norton, and join us in wishing Bartlett a happy birthday! Jennifer Bartlett (American, 1941 – 2022), "Waterlilies-Crude Foyer," 1989, Oil on canvas, painted wood table, and break-formed hot-rolled welded steel cone, Canvas: 72 x 72 in. (182.9 x 182.9 cm), Table: 32 1/2 x 30 3/8 x 35 in. (82.6 x 77.2 x 88.9 cm), Cone diameter: 7 1/2 x 13 in. (19.1 x 33 cm), Gift of Pamela and Robert B. Goergen, 2022.42a-b, ?
