Norton Healthcare is a leader in serving adult and pediatric patients from throughout Greater Louisville, Southern Indiana, the commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond. The not-for-profit hospital and health care system is Louisville’s second largest employer, with more than 18,600 employees, over 1,750 employed medical providers and nearly 3,000 total providers on its medical staff. Norton Healthcare has five Louisville-based hospitals with a total of 1,907 licensed beds. Norton West Louisville Hospital is scheduled to open in late 2024. Norton Heart & Vascular Institute is proud to be one of four facilities in Kentucky participating in the Left Atrial Appendage Exclusion for Prophylactic Stroke Reduction (LeAAPS) clinical trial. This global study is evaluating the effectiveness of left atrial appendage exclusion (LAAE) in preventing ischemic stroke and arterial embolism in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The trial uses the AtriClip LAA Exclusion System, a device designed to permanently seal the left atrial appendage—the area where stroke-causing clots often form in atrial fibrillation (A-fib) patients. While this system is already widely used, this study aims to further validate its stroke prevention potential for those at risk. With more than 1,100 cardiac surgeries performed annually, our experienced team is uniquely positioned to contribute to this important research while potentially offering early access to this treatment for qualifying patients. ?? Last month, Jason L Crowell, MD and Gregory E Cooper, MD, Ph.D. represented Norton Neuroscience Institute at Neurology on the Hill, where they met with lawmakers to advocate for the future of neurological care. As elected members of the American Academy of Neurology, they helped educate policymakers on the critical role of neurologists in patient care and the urgent need for reform.
