Professor Kristian Hammond says Northwestern University's The Center for Advancing Safety of Machine Intelligence (CASMI) is working to develop the kinds of guardrails that will help us use AI for a bigger and better impact on the world without compromising our well-being. "Northwestern Now" sat down with Hammond to discuss some of the basics of AI, where the dangers are and what CASMI is doing to identify and address these issues. https://lnkd.in/gf5jGnbk

On October 17, during the Northwestern Security and AI Lab's annual “Conference on AI and National Security,” director V.S. Subrahmanian unveiled new reports generated by the Northwestern Terror Early Warning System (NTEWS), a machine-learning platform that models terrorist behavior to forecast the likelihood and types of attacks that specific terrorist groups will carry out within the next six months. Hosted by Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the conference was co-sponsored by University College Cork and the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics. During today's Conference on AI & National Security hosted by the Northwestern Security & AI Lab (NSAIL), V.S. Subrahmanian unveiled the new NTEWS project: "NSAIL's new Northwestern Terror Early Warning System (NTEWS) supports two main functions: using predictive models to predict when and where terrorist groups will carry out attacks and explaining the merits of these predictive models to policymakers." Learn how NTEWS can support counterterrorism efforts: https://spr.ly/6045qklWN NSAIL is led by V.S.
