Amidst the backdrop of self-inflicted terrible times for U.S. scientific progress, personnel, and leadership, some knowledge creation continues. Here, I'm pleased to share PhD candidate Victoria Lang's latest study "Assessing the air quality, public health, and equity implications of an Advanced Clean Trucks policy for Illinois." Link: https://lnkd.in/gWS8h5Cs This study explores the air quality and health benefits of an ACT policy currently under consideration at the Illinois Pollution Control Board. The study was published in a special volume of Frontiers of Earth Science curated to honor the life’s work of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Don Wuebbles – whose atmospheric science research and policy contributions are inspirational, impactful, and on-going. Thanks Don! This study’s design relied heavily on the lived experience, feedback, and policy goals of NET-Z coalition members (https://lnkd.in/gDScv_g2), including the Warehouse Workers for Justice, Respiratory Health Association, and Little Village Environmental Justice Organization, as well as Environmental Defense Fund expertise and funds from the U.S. National Science Foundation, Environmental Defense Fund, and Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy. ? The story of the study and our academic-community partnership are wonderfully captured in this Northwestern University press release written by Amanda Morris:?https://lnkd.in/gqGbYHMF And featured in this Chicago Tribune article by Nara Schoenberg: https://lnkd.in/gF9pGxXE Study co-authors include Sara F. Camilleri, Neda D., Maria Harris, Larissa Koehler, Brian Urbaszewski, & Anastasia Montgomery.

Great to see Northwestern University #startup and Trienens-Q Accelerator company NylaNova making a splash on CBS with their game-changing work in #plastic #recycling. NylaNova and its founders, Q Entrepreneurial Fellow Yosi Kratish and Professor Tobin Marks, are enabling the ultimate closed-loop process to recycle #nylon. Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy Northwestern University - Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Northwestern University Department of Chemistry Phil Carter, Sonia Kim
Last Friday, I had the honor of joining CBS for a live interview to discuss our work in plastic recycling and the innovative research we’ve been advancing at Northwestern University. Our team has developed a technology we’re truly confident in—one with the potential to make a meaningful impact on reducing plastic waste. This confidence led us to launch NylaNova, a company dedicated to bringing our novel process to the world. Want to learn more about the future of recycling? Check out the video from the CBS interview here. #Sustainability #Innovation #PlasticRecycling #PETRecycling #CircularEconomy #NylaNova #NorthwesternUniversity #CBS #Environment #CleanTech #GreenTech #WasteReduction #EcoFriendly #InqbationLab

Exciting work by Northwestern researchers and collaborators! Will Dichtel, Neil Schweitzer
Our latest on #COFs / #2Dpolymers in #AngewandteChemie: Zoheb Hirani found that phenazine-based layered 2D polymers are photocatalysts for reducing #CO2. When incorporated into the COF, the phenazines are more active and produce oxalate, meaning that carbon-carbon bonds are formed. The phenazine monomer is less active and makes far fewer two-carbon products. These results show a unique property of the 2D polymer architecture, and reductions of CO2 that form new carbon-carbon bonds are of interest for making solar fuels. Lots more work to do on improving performance and efficiency, but we are very intrigued by these findings! Great contribution by Neil Schweitzer for helping design a custom photoreactor for these measurements and Edon Vitaku, whose early studies on phenazines in our group several years ago led us to pick back up on these monomers. https://lnkd.in/gx6BHKWX Northwestern University Department of Chemistry Paula M.
