Two historic cities, one historic agreement. We’re collaborating with The London Clinic, the United Kingdom’s largest independent charitable hospital. Our goal is to enhance patient care, expand research and medical education opportunities, drive innovation, and broaden the impact on the communities we serve. This collaboration is an extension of our mission to make people better by making medicine better — locally and globally. #NMBetter

We’re proud to continue to lead research on long COVID at Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive COVID-19 Center. A recent Northwestern Medicine study published in Nature Immunology shows that abnormal lung CT scans in people with long COVID may unlock a way to help prevent pulmonary fibrosis in the future. Our pulmonologist-scientists studied 35 patients, aged 32 to 83, from November 2020 to May 2022. The team discovered that patients with long COVID have cells in their lungs similar to those that can lead to fibrosis (scarring). While some patients showed improvements, others had signs of inflammation or pulmonary fibrosis. These findings may help scientists understand prolonged lung inflammation in long COVID and its links to other types of pulmonary fibrosis. Research on long COVID is still in early stages. Today, on Veterans Day, we honor the courage and dedication of the people who have served our country in the armed forces. In recognition of this day, members of the Northwestern Medicine Champion Network Veterans Chapter, a workforce resource group that champions inclusion of veterans, reflect on what the day means to them, why they joined the Veterans Chapter and how they plan to commemorate the holiday. #NMBetter

Samantha Kedroski, a speech pathologist at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital typically infuses creativity, joy and play into the treatment plans she creates for her pediatric patients. But for one patient, she has taken this philosophy of care to another level. Maddy was diagnosed with a stutter at age 4 and has been working with Samantha for the past several years. Maddy and Samantha see each other twice a month and have formed a special bond. Samantha has taken engaging approaches to Maddy’s treatment, including: ? Accompanying Maddy on stage at a talent show; Kedroski played the ukulele while Maddy sang a Taylor Swift song ? Writing a book together about stuttering ? Helping Maddy’s family with the application process for a specialized summer camp called Camp Shout Out in Michigan that hosts youth who have a stutter and then working there as an instructor for a week to further support Maddy and cheer her on "Camp Shout Out was an incredible experience for me as a clinician, and what I learned from the faculty and leaders there will only help me better serve my patients moving forward,” says Samantha. “It was made even more special by the chance I was given to watch Maddy flourish. Her confidence as a communicator and as a young person came out in vivid colors. Samantha’s clinical expertise, warm energy and dedication have had a significant impact on Maddy’s life. “For us and many other parents whose children get care at Northwestern Medicine, seeing this type of growth in our children is groundbreaking,” says Kristina. “I received a video of my child singing in front of a crowd at camp. Can you imagine? I wouldn't be comfortable doing that myself. Yet there she was, confidently singing on stage.” #NMBetter
