Anish R. Kadakia, MD, an orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist, and Muhammad Y. Mutawakkil, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon, recently joined Steps2Walk in Namibia, Africa. Steps2Walk provides surgeries for foot and ankle deformities in medically underserved areas while also training local surgeons in advanced treatment techniques. During this mission, the team performed 22 challenging surgeries and collaborated with surgeons from Malawi, Angelo and South Africa through lectures, care discussion and surgical planning. “This was my first medical trip,” says Dr. Mutawakkil. “I’ve always wanted to give back and educate others. This mission aligns perfectly with Steps2Walk’s goal to train local surgeons while helping patients in need.” One case involved a child with a severe deformity caused by a gunshot injury. The team performed surgery to preserve the ankle joint, and the child regained the ability to walk. “This experience enhanced my ability in treating deformities,” says Dr. Kadakia, “and allowed me to learn from others on the team about managing complex patient cases.” Thank you to the entire team for your dedication and hard work in making a difference in the lives of these patients. #NMBetter

Today we’re spotlighting Brian Wilson, a Security Services customer service officer at Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital. Brian spreads joy by creating special “Big Brother” and “Big Sister” badges for siblings coming to meet the new additions to their families. These badges may seem like a small gesture, but they often carry much meaning for families during what can be a stressful time. Brian’s kindness and attention to detail make a world of difference for these children, helping them feel included and celebrated. Brian puts heart into what he does, and his constant smile brightens the days of everyone around him. Brian, thank you for going above and beyond to make these moments so memorable for those we serve. #NMBetter

We’re proud to continue to lead research on long COVID at Northwestern Medicine Comprehensive COVID-19 Center. A recent Northwestern Medicine study published in Nature Immunology shows that abnormal lung CT scans in people with long COVID may unlock a way to help prevent pulmonary fibrosis in the future. Our pulmonologist-scientists studied 35 patients, aged 32 to 83, from November 2020 to May 2022. The team discovered that patients with long COVID have cells in their lungs similar to those that can lead to fibrosis (scarring). While some patients showed improvements, others had signs of inflammation or pulmonary fibrosis. These findings may help scientists understand prolonged lung inflammation in long COVID and its links to other types of pulmonary fibrosis. Research on long COVID is still in early stages. If you would like more information on our Comprehensive COVID-19 Center, visit nm.org. To schedule an appointment at 312.926.9900. #NMBetter

Today, on Veterans Day, we honor the courage and dedication of the people who have served our country in the armed forces. In recognition of this day, members of the Northwestern Medicine Champion Network Veterans Chapter, a workforce resource group that champions inclusion of veterans, reflect on what the day means to them, why they joined the Veterans Chapter and how they plan to commemorate the holiday. #NMBetter
