“There’s more and more scientific proof that art therapy is good for your physical health. We secrete hormones when we visit a museum and these hormones are responsible for our well-being,”?explained Helene Boyer, vice president of the French Canadian medical association who was involved in the Canadian project.?? Art?outings don’t just spur us to produce different hormones. They also?spur us to experience awe. And science also shows the feeling of being in the presence of something bigger than ourselves is a potent stress buster and?all around mental health tonic. https://lnkd.in/eSSx7Bmu

We are so proud this program! Thanks to our education team led by Robert W., Lindsey Newton, and Linda Strong; and the representatives on our staff who will be mentoring these talented students in the months to come. Thanks also to Dr. Adam Swinyard and the passionate people at Spokane Public Schools who have supported our vision from the beginning and have helped make this real. Here’s to our select students and to young creatives everywhere. We cannot wait to see what your future will bring to all of us.
TEENS @ THE MAC: “My heart is just bursting hearing you all say why you’re here.” Last week, eight students from Rogers, Ferris, North Central, Shadle Park and Lewis and Clark high schools gathered at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture for the first Teens @ the MAC meeting. The new youth leadership program is designed to give students with an interest int the arts an introduction to career pathways in the arts. Learn more about the program and their orientation, which included a meet and greet with the MAC’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rachel Allen, at https://lnkd.in/gds9czdK. #EngageIRL

We are deeply saddened by the recent loss of Lila Shaw?Girvin, a beloved artist and MAC supporter who contributed profoundly to the civic and cultural fabric of Spokane. Girvin passed away on January 9, 2025 at the age of 95.? Originally from Jefferson County, CO,?Girvin?moved to western Washington State in the 1950s. She studied with acclaimed Northwest painter Kenneth Callahan before making her home in Spokane in 1958. Here,?Girvin?cultivated a singular artistic voice, creating a robust body of abstract paintings informed by regional landscapes, dreams, and spiritual exploration. The artist stated,?“My paintings are images from the mind, remembrance enhanced. They are yearnings for the mysterious, the strange, the sacred.”? ? Girvin’s work is represented in several prominent Pacific Northwest permanent collections. In 2022, the MAC presented a 60-year career survey, highlighting Girvin’s intertwined artistic, domestic, and community-driven life.?“Girvin’s delicate, emotionally-attuned paintings—extensions of her rich inner world—illuminate any space they inhabit, as did the artist herself,” said Anne-Claire Mitchell, the exhibition’s curator.? ? Girvin?fearlessly advocated for regional causes in arts and culture, environmentalism, and human rights. She will be greatly missed.
