The Children's Medical Fund of New York (CMF) was created in 1966 by a group of concerned parents who recognized the need for a children’s hospital on Long Island. Since then, CMF has raised more than $90 million to support programs at Cohen Children's Medical Center, including a new $5 million gift to help build a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Pavilion. When Susan Karches lost Peter, her husband of 30 years, to chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a type of blood cancer, she made a commitment to support medical research to help other families. Since Peter’s passing in 2006, Susan’s generosity has transformed research at The Feinstein Institutes. Her $5 million gift established the Karches Family Professor in Translational Research and the Karches Family Laboratory, enabling the recruitment of Douglas F. Nixon, MD, PhD as the inaugural recipient. Dr. Nixon directs the newly formed Institute of Translational Research, the sixth institute at The Feinstein Institutes. ??
