Musician Keith Ruzika suffered what could have been a potentially fatal heart attack after undergoing an angiogram at the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital. Luckily, our team – led by NSUH’s Cath Lab Director Dr. Perwaiz Meraj – gave Keith the best care possible. In time, Keith's heart function was restored, and he was able to play music again. He was joined by his South Bay Trio on Oct. 21 to play a concert in the lobby of the new Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion to thank the healthcare workers who gave him a second chance. Ndaba Mandela made a lasting impression on me recently, sharing his insights on how we might break the HIV/AIDS stigma; learn from the legacy of his grandfather, Nelson Mandela; and maintain our humanism as we lead. It was a distinct privilege to join him in a fireside chat at Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital to recognize Global Diversity Awareness Month. Ndaba reminded us that his grandfather’s life was a testament to service, that he led by example with unwavering humanity. These principles are particularly important as we navigate how health care is evolving as we embrace new technologies to create a healthier future for all. Global Diversity Awareness Month underscores the value of having an array of perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences that we each bring to our work and communities, and the impact that ultimately has on the world. A musical reunion took place this week at North Shore University Hospital as one of our former cardiac patients, musician Keith Ruzika, showed his gratitude for the team who saved his life by playing an afternoon concert in the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital lobby. Compassionate care is at the heart of every patient’s journey. In October 2021, Eliany was faced with an unexpected and life-threatening diagnosis: five brain aneurysms. One month later, she underwent emergency brain surgery where our team addressed two aneurysms on the verge of rupture. Under the care of Dr. Ina Teron, Eliany’s journey continued with three additional surgeries, the latest in February of this year. "Dr. Teron’s compassion and support have made all the difference during this difficult time. I am profoundly grateful for her dedication and the care she provided, guiding me through each step of my journey," said Eliany.
