"There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, 'Morning boys. How's the water?' And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, 'What the hell is water?'" - David Foster Wallace, address at Kenyon College in 2005 Have you ever unintentionally done this? Have your modes become so #habitual that you don't #notice how they filter out your #perception of #reality? It's called #perception #blindness, and it causes us to #underestimate the extent to which we can #learn from other #people. We begin to think that others think just like us. Break yourself out of your #routines and shake off your #filter #bubbles. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/g2v9y5g3 #serendipity #innovation #leadership #strategy #design #experience

#serendipity is everywhere!
"It all started with a single party at USC," said Sean Rad, co-founder, recalling #Tinder's 2012 launch. The app began simply enough, displaying dating profiles in a basic format. But something was missing - While working at his desk one day, another #Tinder co-founder and developer, Jonathan Badeen, found himself absently shuffling a deck of cards between coding sessions. As he flicked through the cards, something clicked. The natural, fluid motion of sorting cards into "yes" and "no" piles perfectly mirrored the decision-making process their users needed to make when viewing potential matches. This wasn't just any casual observation - it was a moment where physical reality collided with digital possibility. The tactile experience of moving cards felt natural and intuitive. Badeen recognized that this same satisfaction could be translated into a digital interface. Instead of filing this observation away for later or taking it through formal channels, Badeen immediately began translating the physical card interaction into code. He worked to capture not just the basic left/right sorting, but the subtle physics of card movement - the way cards would follow your finger, the slight resistance, the satisfying snap when released. If Badeen had been following a rigid development schedule or strictly adhering to predetermined feature lists, this moment might never have happened. The cards on his desk might have been seen as a distraction rather than inspiration. The serendipitous elements aligned perfectly: ?? Openness and Active Engagement: Badeen wasn't just passively working - he was deeply involved in developing the app's interface, which made him particularly attuned to interaction possibilities. ?? Exploratory Culture: The workspace culture allowed for moments of experimentation and play rather than demanding constant, heads-down productivity. ?? Connection: The ability to recognize how a physical interaction could translate into a digital experience required both technical knowledge and design intuition. ?? Activation: As a technical co-founder, Badeen had both the skills and authority to translate his insight directly into code The impact of this serendipitous moment extended far beyond Tinder. The "swipe" became a fundamental gesture in mobile interfaces, inspiring countless other apps and features. What started as a casual interaction with a deck of cards transformed into a cultural phenomenon that changed how millions of people navigate not just dating but many aspects of digital life. I'm excited to announce "Design is a Team Sport" – my new newsletter on design collaboration! After 20+ years leading design projects, I've seen how the most powerful solutions emerge when diverse teams tackle tough challenges together. Our tools have evolved, and AI is changing the game, but the fundamental value of human-centered collaboration remains constant. In this newsletter, I'll share practical insights on facilitating effective workshops, applying design thinking methods that get results, and building team confidence – whether you're collaborating in-person or remotely. First issue drops next week!

#Diverse inputs are essential to a #serendipity practice in which #novel #insights, #ideas, and #opportunities are created. "Minority viewpoints are important, not because they tend to prevail but because they stimulate divergent attention and thought. As a result, even when they are wrong, they contribute to the detection of novel solutions that, on balance, are qualitatively better." - Charlan Nemeth, psychologist Seek out individuals and inputs that challenge your point of view, call out your assumptions, and cause you to springboard to new and better ideas. https://lnkd.in/g2v9y5g3 #practiceserendipity #serendipity #innovation #leadership #strategy #design #experience

?? A SERENDIPITY STORY ?? ?? In 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver was researching adhesives at 3M, aiming to create a super-strong adhesive for the aerospace industry. Instead, he created something that seemed like a failure - a "microsphere" adhesive that stuck but could also be peeled off easily, leaving no residue. While fascinating, this "low-tack" adhesive appeared to be a solution without a problem. Rather than dismissing this "failure," Silver's scientific curiosity drove him to keep exploring its potential. For five years, he gave presentations about his discovery throughout 3M, sharing it widely even without a clear application. In 1974, another 3M scientist, Art Fry, was growing frustrated with paper bookmarks falling out of his hymnal during choir practice. Having attended one of Silver's presentations, he made the crucial connection between his everyday problem and Silver's unique adhesive. Instead of just theorizing, Fry took immediate action, contacting Silver. They both dove in, heading to the lab to experiment with applying the adhesive to paper. ?? It worked! However, the final breakthrough came organically when they started using their prototype notes to communicate around the office. Messages stuck to desks, doors, and documents revealed the real magic: they had invented a new way for people to share, communicate, and collaborate. What started as a scientific accident, then a bookmark solution, evolved into something far more valuable through their willingness to remain open to unexpected possibilities and connections and keep pursuing new ideas and opportunities. ?? Both scientists shared essential traits that made this innovation possible: they saw "failures" as interesting discoveries, freely shared ideas with colleagues, remained open to unexpected applications, and quickly tested theories with real-world experiments. Combined with 3M's supportive environment for exploration, these mindsets created perfect conditions for serendipity to flourish. ??
