Biased algorithms, degree screens, stereotypes, misperceptions, and the lack of alumni networks all contribute to the paper ceiling, creating barriers to economic mobility. For these STARs (workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes), the paper ceiling often holds them back from earning higher wages commensurate with their skills. We're working to change that. At Northland Workforce Training Center we are committed to uplifting STARs through our involvement in the #TearThePaperCeiling campaign created by Opportunity@Work and the Ad Council. Check out our STAR graduate Dainyurka Vicenty's story below! After finishing high school, Dainyurka knew that she’d enjoy a hands-on, technically focused career. She was drawn to NWTC’s Mechatronics program. Mechatronics combines electrical, mechanical, robotics, and computer technologies. “You’re working with motors, you’re working with hydraulics and pneumatics, I really love it,” says Dainyurka. Her time at NWTC led to a role at Tesla. “That’s their goal here (at NWTC), making sure that you end up with a job before you even graduate,” she says. “They’ll help you with your resume, help you practice for your interviews … They’ll make sure you’re all set.” ?? The team at Northland Workforce Training Center led by Stephen Tucker, MBA is doing an amazing job helping individuals build skills and knowledge and transform lives. There are a variety of pathways available to acquire skills that are applicable to careers in manufacturing as well as other sectors. Programming at Northland Workforce Training Center recognizes the reality of building our regions workforce, by aligning and creating programming that is responsive to the manufacturing economy and helping uplift people into family sustaining careers. #ampupyourfuture

Rotary Club of Buffalo members were treated to a tour of Northland Workforce Training Center by Vice President of Operations Asantewa Holley MBA. Ms. Holley is responsible for the day to day operations at NWTC. She led us through the various program areas including electrical and various machine operations, some sponsored by our major business leaders like West Herr. The program is part of the Buffalo Billion program and has successfully trained many people who live in the poorest areas of the city. Most grads grab jobs that pay over $40,000 a year and some even achieve salaries in the six figures. Great job Northland! Thanks to Laurie Albertsson for arranging the tour and for supplying Rotarians with lunch as well!

We hopefully look back on this accomplishment as the pebble that started the wave of change in Technical Education. Big thanks to many who gave us the energy to get this first big win. Congratulations Northland Workforce Training Center on a great achievement! It's exciting to see two of our very own Fresenius Kabi USA employees in the photo above who have successfully gone through our Kabi Academy training program developed in partnership with the Northland Workforce Training Center. The program isn't just about gaining technical skills, but also about opening doors to new opportunities, building confidence, and shaping a stronger future for our workforce.
