"The program’s signature strength lies in its two-generation approach, which addresses the comprehensive needs of participants and their children so the family can thrive after completing the program." This article brings to life what a dedicated team can do to transform lives. We thank the John T. Gorman Foundation for their ongoing support of McAuley Residence.

Northern Light Mercy Hospital is an acute care hospital in Portland, Maine with a total of 230 inpatient beds. All rooms are 100 percent private. Private rooms enhance a speedy recovery and a more restful, less stressful stay for our patients. Beyond our doors, you’ll find the latest medical technology, used by a team of highly skilled doctors, nurses, physician assistants, therapists, and support staff. Alongside all of this technology, you’ll find care that recognizes each patient – body, mind, and spirit. Established in 1918 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland and the Sisters of Mercy, Northern Light Mercy Hospital’s mission has always been to carry out the healing work of Christ by providing compassionate, accessible, clinically excellent healthcare, especially to the poor and disadvantaged. We advocate for a society in which all can realize their full potential and achieve the common good. We give priority to those that society ignores. Our community focus amounts to nearly $12 million in benefits annually. These benefits range from unreimbursed and pro-bono medical services to community education and prevention outreach. Northern Light Mercy Hospital is part of a non-profit organization and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.

February marks Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on two often-overlooked cancers that can have a significant impact on those diagnosed. Gallbladder cancer and bile duct cancer are rare, with an estimated 12,350 cases of both types combined diagnosed in 2024, but they can be aggressive and challenging to detect in the early stages. This month, we aim to raise awareness, promote early detection, and encourage a better understanding of these cancers to improve outcomes for those affected. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ in the abdomen that sits beneath the liver. It collects and stores bile, a fluid produced by the liver to facilitate fat digestion. The bile ducts are small tubes that transport bile fluid from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine. Cholangiocarcinoma is another name for bile duct cancer. It can be intrahepatic or extrahepatic, meaning in can form in the ducts inside and outside the liver. Both types of cancers share common symptoms: - Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) - Abdominal pain in the upper right side of the abdomen - Fever - Nausea and vomiting - Bloating - Lumps in the abdomen - Unintended weight loss - Dark urine and clay-colored stools ?
