Thank you, Andrew for your partnership and for geeking out with us about thermally modified wood. We are so excited to see the final result at dr!p. And fun fact: despite a shared surname with our owner, they are not related; just another Sheridan with excellent taste!
Final materials selection for the lobby of dr!p. No going back! Both of these are examples of thermally modified wood, which is an incredible technology that converts the sugars in wood and drives out moisture to make it sustainable, dimensionally stable, and - without those carbs to eat - little for fungus to thrive on. The left is ‘Triple’ from Oy Lunawood Ltd - the Finnish company that invented the process to thermally modify wood at scale, then found a way to share the technology with the world. The right is ‘brnsh’ from Arbor Wood Co. that creates innovative finishes like this ‘yakisugi’ finish, reminiscent of old Japanese temples. Nobody’s paying me so I can tell you these are both incredible products! NORTHERN OHIO LUMBER & TIMBER is the leader in my area for thermally modified wood products, understanding the inherent characteristics and their architectural and design advantages. Going there to see what they’re up to is always a fun education. Every architect and designer should fully understand the inherent benefits of this chemical-free technology. It’s ability to impact both the environment outside - and the environment inside - is hard to ignore.
