October is National Apple Month! ?? Apples are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, all of which benefit human health. They also provide an array of antioxidants. During 2023 we received 69,010 pounds of apples in donations to distribute to neighbors throughout Northern Illinois to help them thrive! #neighborsempowered What's your favorite way to eat an apple?

From September 15-October 15, Northern Illinois Food Bank will be recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting Hispanic leaders who have made impacts in the food community. Today we look at an important current leader in the farm workers movement. Teresa Romero became the president of United Farm Workers in 2018. During her time in this role, she has advocated for immigration policies, protections for workers during COVID, and access to food and protective gear for farm workers. Romero helps to ensure the food that passes through Northern Illinois Food Bank and our homes is grown in safe, respectful conditions.

A very special thanks to our very own Executive Women's Council of Northern Illinois Food Bank who volunteered at our Mobile Market in Channahon earlier this week. Who are the Executive Women's Council? The Executive Women's Council of Northern Illinois Food Bank is a network of compassionate and dedicated women whose mission is to work in partnership with the Food Bank by donating time, food, and funds through an annual fundraising event and other initiatives so that everyone in Northern Illinois can have the food and resources they need to thrive. We are always grateful for the help and support of this amazing group!

Today we highlight Jose Oliva came to the US with his family escaping civil war in Guatemala. Recognizing harsh conditions for immigrants in our US food systems, Jose has worked on workers rights in both the restaurant and farm systems. Jose Has received a James Beard Award and a Food Heroes Award for his work.

Yesterday, the Greater Chicagoland Area Food Banks - Northern Illinois Food Bank, Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana - released a "Greater Chicagoland Hunger Report" to help raise awareness about the rise of food insecurity, the need for more community support and resources for families. The rise in food insecurity is not an urban, rural or suburban issue. We are seeing it across the board at all three Food Banks so we're joining together to ensure families have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. ??
