Announcing our seed investment into 'bendy' digital X-ray company Silveray. Northern Gritstone has led the ￡4 million round joined by ACF Investors, Empirical Ventures, Deeptech Labs and Hamamatsu Photonics Europe. Silveray's digital technology is also flexible, allowing it to wrap around objects and areas, from industrial pipes to the human body. Today the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, the UK’s first female Chancellor, delivered her budget. During her speech, she thanked individuals who had provided analysis and guidance including Northern Gritstone’s Chair and former Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, Lord Jim O’Neill. Her budget focuses on long-term investment for growth, covering research & development and infrastructure. It includes: ? Record levels of government R&D investment, with ￡20.4?billion allocated in the fiscal year 2025-26 ? Up to ￡520m for a new Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing fund. ? ￡3.9?billion in 2025-26 for the first carbon capture and storage (CCUS) clusters in the UK ?? Delivery of the Trans-Pennine route upgrade to connect York, Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester ?? An east-west rail link between Oxford and Cambridge This is positive news for the UK. ? R&D investment is the ‘flywheel’ that supports private investing into the growth industries of the future including life sciences and deep tech. And although we live in a hybrid world, infrastructure supports regional cluster creation, which is critical if we are to build a Silicon Valley of the North ?????? ?? Robots powered by insect brains could be used on Mars ?? Northern Gritstone's first portfolio company Opteran features in The Times today. The company - a spin-out from The University of Sheffield - has developed an AI system for robotics which could be used on the red planet's challenging terrain following its partnership announcement with Airbus, Europe’s largest aerospace company, and the UK and European Space Agencies to test its platform inside Airbus’s Mars rover.
