This Women's History Month, we wanted to spotlight someone very special to Northern, Elizabeth Hutter! ? In 1853, Elizabeth's efforts led to the founding of Northern Home, a residential facility for children whose parents or guardians had died or who were left without them due to other circumstances. Over the next four decades, she worked tirelessly to provide vulnerable youth housing, education, and support. During the Civil War, Elizabeth became very active in various relief efforts. She nursed wounded soldiers at Gettysburg, organized relief efforts for Union soldiers, and even visited Abraham Lincoln to advocate for the orphans of soldiers and sailors. In 1866, Pennsylvania Governor John Geary appointed her "Lady Inspector of the Department of Soldiers' Orphans," making her the first woman in the state's history to receive a Governor's commission. Our new Youth Promoting Peace Program (YP3) cohort started on March 4th! ?? We're excited to have two new schools, Dr. Ethel D. Allen Promise Academy and Mastery Chart School - Pickett Campus, and two returning schools, KIPP Philadelphia Preparatory Academy and AMY Northwest, participating! This program is designed to empower young people and help them decrease exposure to violence and learn to navigate trauma while building leadership skills that broaden their experience, perspectives, and possibilities. Some of the things youth will learn: ?? Conflict resolution strategies ?? Leadership skills ?? Financial literacy ?? Impact of trauma due to gun violence in our communities Participating youth will also be taking a few trips to Morgan State University in Baltimore, the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, and The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. At Northern, the goal of our behavioral health programs is to help Philadelphia children, youth, and families achieve and maintain appropriate and positive functioning, which will transfer to community, home, and school environments. Northern's Youth Promoting Peach Program (YP3) brings Philadelphia youth together to learn how to heal, grow, and lead. ? Youth ages 14-24 will learn how to navigate trauma, resolve trauma, healthy social media engagement, the impact of gun violence within our communities, and so much more. These activities aim to decrease exposure to violence and trauma symptoms. Every participant will build life and leadership skills, such as financial literacy, physical and mental fitness, and conflict resolution strategies to broaden their experience, perspectives, and possibilities. Participants will receive a stipend for program completion, and transportation, dinner, and snacks will be provided. ?? 20 Years of Service, 20 Years of Impact! ?? For two decades, Villanova students have been making a difference at Northern Children's Services, and we couldn’t be more grateful! ??? Through the dedication of Villanova’s Campus Ministry Team and Villanova Rays of Sunshine, volunteers spend time each week tutoring and mentoring the incredible kids at Northern. A special shoutout to seniors like Mary Swartzberg and Megan Starck, who have been volunteering their entire four years at Villanova! ???? As they prepare to graduate this spring, Mary reflects on her experience: "Volunteering to tutor with Northern has been one of the most profound experiences of my life. Witnessing the resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit of the children has truly inspired me. Equally inspiring has been the passion and commitment of the staff. Northern’s mission to uplift and support young minds is something I am deeply honored to have contributed to, even in a small way. I am grateful for the opportunity to have played a role in fostering hope, confidence, and a brighter future for the children and have been forever changed by my time as a volunteer." The Wellness and Resiliency Program at Northern provides therapeutic afterschool and all-day summer support for children ages 8-14 in Philadelphia who are living with behavioral and emotional challenges. Why does this program matter? ?? A safe, structured environment is key to helping children navigate their emotions and behaviors. ?? Therapeutic services address challenges early, giving children the tools they need to build healthier habits and coping mechanisms. ??
