Northern California PET Imaging Center, or simply NCPIC, is an internationally recognized molecular imaging community-based non-profit organization created to pioneer a newly developed healthcare imaging tool called position emission tomography (“PET”) which allowed NCPIC to be the first independent, non-academic, PET imaging center in the United States.

I am excited to announce the team at NCPIC has successfully completed the acquisition of our corporate headquarters - 3195 Folsom Blvd in Sacramento - our home for the past 32 years! Special “thank you” to all involved to make this transaction seamless including: NCPIC’s finance team led by George Lenzi and Beverly M Whitlock. Great illustration of the power of PET/CT visualizing prostate cancer with accurate precision. In this educational example, NCPIC imaging discovered: “Stage 1 PSMA Exam Finding: Male with new diagnosis of prostate cancer, Gleason score 3 + 3, PSA 6.10. PSMA PET CT shows one focus of abnormal tracer activity confined to the left prostate lobe, consistent with biopsy proved cancer. No evidence of PSMA-avid metastasis.” Kudos to the NCPIC care team, led by Medical Director DAFANG Wu, MD, for their great work! —————— Some notes: “Gleason score” helps determine prostate cancer risk level which range from sub-6 to 10. (6 = low 10 = high risk). The prostate gland has a left & right side, so a Gleason score adds together left & right figures. PSA refers to a blood test marker called a prostate specific antigen (“PSA”). Above 2.5 is considered high risk for prostate. #psma #petct #PSA #prostatecancer #cancerawareness #healthcare

Cancer care teams globally use the term “malignant transformation” to describe a cancer type that literally changes from one type of cancer to another - so I wanted to visualize this phenomenon on a type of cancer called “non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.” In this illustration, a patient was diagnosed with a type of lymphoma called a “low grade follicular lymphoma” and was referred to NCPIC for a baseline PET/CT to help oncology care teams visualize disease location and progress. (Bottom images). Our clinical team felt the follicular lymphoma appeared to have “transformed” - from follicular to “diffused large B-cell lymphoma” - and recommended a new biopsy be performed to confirm lymphoma type; confirming a malignant transformation occurred. The change in clinical information resulted in lymphoma therapy change to “R.I.C.E. Therapy” - and favorable treatment response as visualized on a follow-up PET/CT (top row). Special thanks to great clinical work performed by the NCPIC imaging team and our talented Medical Director DAFANG Wu . Some notes: RICE is an oncology acronym which includes: rituximab, ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide phosphate - all types of therapy agents. Retuximab was created by Genentech Roche and is sold under the drug name “Rituxan”. Malignant transformations occurs about 2% of the cases according to Lymphoma Action. I had the pleasure of spending two days with the Oncology Nursing Society and I must say, these nurses are incredible! The ONS nurses were brilliant, kind, supportive, experienced, practical, educational, informative, inclusive, communicative, caring & oncology experts. The past couple days I learned about new cancer cell therapy, brachytherapy, cancer treatments impact on human sexuality, role of cannibas, genetic testing update, health policy, advocacy, et al. Wonderful information. It's inspiring to know that we have over 5.1 million RN’s nationally, as well as over 500,000 in California. Just wanted to illustrate the power of modern oncology therapy - visualized at two points in time using FDG PET/CT - to treat a type of cancer called “non-small cell” lung cancer. In this this illustration, a stage IV non-small cell lung cancer patient was treated with an oral chemotherapy agent called TAGRISSO? (osimertinib) HCP, manufactured by AstraZeneca, with imaging technology FDG PET/CT being used to visualize care treatment progress. The improvements are quite dramatic, with NCPIC’s Medical Director DAFANG Wu finding the patient achieved a favorable, but partial, treatment response on their FDG PET/CT exams. The FDA has recently approved a new type of cancer-fighting treatment for prostate cancer called PLUVICTO? (lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan) HCP - so I wanted to share an illustration of this new tech in clinical use with the audience. I know most aren’t familiar with reading diagnostic exams let alone #PETCT images, but if your zoom in on the photo below you can see quite a dramatic therapy response change comparing the top and bottom row of images. Great illustration of modern medicine and molecular imaging in action. In this exam example a Sacramento-based care team adminstered TAGRISSO? (osimertinib) HCP, which is an oral therapy medication to treat non-small cell cancer, which was evaluated by #PETCT at two time points to evaluate treatment response. For those unfamiliar with looking at these types of exams compare the bottom & top far right exams for response. Bottom was the initial scan while the top is the subsequent exam. Thanks to DAFANG Wu and the team at NCPIC for the great case illustration.
