Earlier this year we, along with Blue Shield of California Foundation and the Tax Equity Funders Network, in partnership with the Asset Funders Network, and League of California Community Foundations, hosted a three-part virtual Funder Learning Series designed to deepen funders’ awareness and understanding of systems improvements needed to ensure all those who are eligible gain access to tax credits in California. Three key insights emerged from our series: 1?? Many non-filers, typically the lowest income households and disproportionately people of color, are missing out on the tax credits and benefits they qualify for. 2?? The majority of filers use paid tax preparers, resulting in a loss of millions of dollars for individuals and families with low incomes. 3?? California is a national leader in expanding tax credits to include immigrants with Individual taxpayer identification numbers (ITINs). Read More: https://lnkd.in/drPsZg3x

Reflection | "This past Monday, we gathered in downtown Oakland with 124 attendees to do some meaning-making, gain a sharper shared #analysis, fellowship, and mobilize towards action. Through the support of the NCG team, our speakers, participants, sponsors, and vendors we did what we set out to do. From the opening plenary with Steve Phillips, we were inspired at holding onto the distinction between “persuading” a base versus “#mobilizing” a base, and the role of local and county-level organizing in taking back our country. One method philanthropy has adopted to push back on that kind of toxic rhetoric has been direct support for narrative change strategies. The aim is to shift the prevalent stories around big issues like immigration [and] racial justice.”? ? Join us, alongside the Council on Foundations, United Philanthropy Forum, Independent Sector, National Council of Nonprofits, and SoCal Grantmakers, to voice #opposition to House Bill 9495. The bill passed the House yesterday. While less likely to pass a Senate vote, this bill is likely to return in 2025. The bill raises concerns with the power it gives the executive branch to ‘effectively dismantle any nonprofit organization—including news outlets, universities, and civil liberties organizations—by stripping them of their tax-exempt status based on a unilateral accusation of wrongdoing’ -ACLU.
