Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC)

NBRC is a fully remote organization, but we do love a reason to work together in person (and even more so when it coincides with a visit to some of our grantees!) A number of our Southern Vermont team members and our Federal Co-Chair had the opportunity to co-work in Brattleboro's BiziTown Workspace last week, a recipient of 2021 Catalyst funding (formerly SEID). We experienced the benefits of having a flexible co-working environment available to individuals and organizations just like ours, equipped with open work spaces, desks, private offices, a conference room, lounge, and (most importantly) high speed internet. We enjoyed hearing how the space has been utilized by freelancers, remote workers, business owners, and organizations seeking appropriate space for meetings. Selected as a NBRC-USDA project in 2021, Retreat Farm sought to turn the North Barn into a year-round event venue, providing a one-of-a-kind indoor community space. Taking a 190-year-old barn and transforming it into a modern gathering space was no light undertaking, and we were aptly impressed to see what Retreat Farm accomplished with this project. The community now has a large indoor space that can lend itself to seemingly endless possibilities, from proms and concerts to lectures, weddings, conferences, community events, and a place to simply enjoy quality time together. ??New Opening: NBRC is looking for an Executive Director! The Executive Director is responsible for the administrative and fiscal management of the NBRC, and for ensuring that the organization’s structure, budget, and overall functions align with the organization’s strategic plan and executive branch initiatives within the region. The position oversees the NBRC’s programmatic, finance and administrative staff, and reports to the Federal Co-Chairperson, as well as to representatives from each of the four NBRC States. The ED, in collaboration with the Federal Co-Chairperson, also operates as a lead public face of the NBRC in the region. The ideal candidate will possess at least 10 years of economic development experience, and will bring to the role relationships with economic development professionals in Northern New England, New York, and beyond. Members and supporters of FOR/ME recently toured the #masstimber building currently under construction at Jesup Memorial Library in @Bar Harbor and two completed mass timber buildings at the College of the Atlantic. All three buildings used cross-laminated timber products. The Jesup Library expansion will save 37% on its carbon footprint. This project represents a new market for Maine softwood, such as eastern hemlock, and is the first in the region. Earlier this week, NBRC's Forest Economy Program Manager visited the Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor, ME and got to view progress on their mass timber expansion project! With NBRC support through the 2023 Forest Economy Program, the project includes an 11,400 square foot addition to the existing building using locally sourced eastern hemlock cross-laminated timber (CLT). By using this green building product, the library will save 37% on the building's carbon footprint and will be the first library in the Northeast built with CLT, setting a promising example for buildings of the future. The NBRC has received a special appropriation since 2018 for these awards, which has resulted in working closely with the EDA to award funds to projects that meet the strategic objectives of both agencies. This collaboration amplifies both agencies’ economic development impact in Northern Border communities.

The Reimbursement Coordinator works collaboratively with NBRC staff and leadership, and Federal and State partners, to liaise with and support NBRC-funded projects across the NBRC’s territory. The Coordinator’s primary responsibility is the execution of project reimbursement requests, which is a critical function in the grant making lifecycle. The grant making lifecycle is a core administrative function within the NBRC, and the Coordinator will eventually learn and participate in other duties in the lifecycle. The ideal candidate will demonstrate curiosity and an eagerness to learn about the work of the NBRC broadly, and will possess a demonstrated aptitude for: attention to detail, organizing and reviewing various types of documentation, and customer service. This position is able to be based anywhere within a NBRC State (Maine, New Hampshire, New York, or Vermont), with periodic in-territory travel for stakeholder, staff, and Commission meetings.
