Nursing students Emma Small and Jamison Hunt are on their way to exceptional healthcare careers if the impact they made on one patient is any indication. For their efforts, they won the Sunflower Award. A patient commended them for the way they made her feel like the most important person. She said, “I have never built a rapport so quickly with my caregivers, but these ladies were special. I felt like more than a patient. They went out of their way to genuinely provide for my care and comfort. They were encouraging, optimistic and brought a light to my day. It’s easy to see their passion for providing care with dignity.” Congratulations, Emma and Jamison! ??

Alem Eyob, BSN, RN, in CICU, received a DAISY Award thanks to a patient who shared many accolades about the care she received. The patient wrote, “I woke up and met an angel named Alem. I was confused and unsure what was happening. Alem reassured me when I thought things were at their worst and cared for me. She kept her composure and professionalism and, most of all, her smile. What I liked most was her obvious love for her job, and the pride she took in caring for me. She is an outstanding nurse and person.”

Ask Zach Willis’ coworkers to describe him and they will likely say he is always willing to help. Zach started at the hospital four years ago and works in a charge role in Respiratory Care. Coworkers recognized him as Respiratory Therapist of the Year at a reception on Oct. 23. “Zach steps up and does whatever is needed. He trains our new employees and always checks on his coworkers,” said Robert Kwi, director of Respiratory Care and Diagnostic Sleep Centers. Respiratory Therapist of the Year is an annual award given to a therapist who embodies the work ethic and clinical skills of Chris Johns, a respiratory therapist killed on her way to the hospital in 1992. Leaders in respiratory care and pulmonologists with Meritas Health Pulmonary Medicine honor a staff member each October during Respiratory Care Week.
