NHSA will hold a meeting of the CSO Community Advisory Board (CAB) on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at the North Hudson Sewerage Authority Board Room from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The meeting is open to the public and will be followed by a tour of the NHSA plant! The CAB is a team of dedicated community members serving as a vital link between the public and NHSA to foster public engagement, increase awareness of water quality issues, and promote solutions to address Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). Meet Michell Velez, our Supervisor of Operations at the Wastewater Treatment Facility in West New York, NJ! Michell joined NHSA as an operator in 2015 and has since grown into a key leader, now overseeing process development, coordination, and training for her team. With a Chemical Engineering degree from NJIT, she applies her leadership both at NHSA and as a Captain in the Connecticut Air National Guard, where she has led teams on multiple deployments and received top honors. During a routine inspection, NHSA uncovered an incredible piece of the past—an 80-foot-long 19th-century wooden sewer buried beneath the Newark/Observer Highway intersection! Built between 1866-1871, this wooden box culvert was a critical component of Hoboken's early infrastructure and an innovative solution for a rapidly growing city.? This discovery is a testament to our city’s engineering history! As NHSA continues to modernize the region's water infrastructure to build a resilient future, we also celebrate the ingenuity of the past. ?????
