Reflecting with gratitude this past month, Gracy Trinoskey-Rice and I had the privilege of visiting 13 community health centers (CHCs) in Northern California with the great staff of the California Primary Care Association (CPCA) and 3 regional primary care associations (PCAs): Alameda Health Consortium, Community Health Partnership, and San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium (SFCCC). We were so impressed with their diversity, innovation, impact, and the power of UNITY in commUNITY. Founded in 1968 in San Francisco's Chinatown, North East Medical Services (NEMS) is not only one of the largest CHCs in the nation, but also one of the most innovative from having a Managed Services Organization (MSO) since 1997 to delivering a Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) in the heart of Chinatown in 2021. With the wonderful CEO of SFCCC Johanna Liu, we had the privilege of spending multiple visits and meals with their entrepreneurial CEO Eddie Chan and his leadership team. It was amazing to see the building of their new PACE site with an indoor garden, indoor track, and a beautiful Singapore theme. With 26 locations across three counties in the San Francisco Bay Area, NEMS's mission is "to provide affordable, comprehensive, compassionate and quality health care services in a linguistically competent and culturally sensitive manner to improve the health and well-being of the community." Their vision is "to be a premier community health center offering a comprehensive array of high-quality health care services and improving the health status of the communities we serve." NEMS is honored to receive the 2024 Community Health Quality Recognition badges from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS for our clinical care quality and patient services delivery in 2023! This year, we were recognized with the Health Center Quality Leader Silver Award, placing NEMS in the top 20% of nearly 1,400 health centers from across the U.S.; the Access Enhancer badge for increasing total patients by at least 5%; and the Health Disparities Reducer badge for achieving consecutive years of improvement on key clinical quality measures like hypertension and diabetes control! We’re thrilled to announce the grand opening of GEMS Las Vegas, a new extension of NEMS – based in the SF Bay Area with over 50 years of experience serving the underserved Chinese community.
