Visitors from around the world travel to the North Carolina Museum of History to discover fascinating secrets and hidden gems from our state's past. Located at 5 East Edenton Street in the heart of downtown Raleigh, across from the Capitol, the state history museum welcomes more than 400,000 visitors a year, including roughly 80,000 school groups. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is FREE. Nearby the museum is convenient parking, restaurants, and many other family-friendly attractions. The Museum is closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, January 2, Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

We are delighted to share that our client North Carolina Museum of History is seeking the next Director for the North Carolina Division of State History Museums (DSHM), which includes the North Carolina Museum of History (NCMOH) in Raleigh, and seven regional museums across the state. The flagship NCMOH, founded in 1902 by Frederick Olds, is embarking on a transformational $180 million physical renovation that will occur over the next 36 months. The incoming Director will have the unique opportunity to contribute to the reimagining of a centrally located museum that welcomes more than 450,000 visitors and 80,000 schoolchildren annually to learn about 14,000 years of inhabited history in the State of North Carolina. North Carolina Museum of History Announces New Maritime Museums Leadership The North Carolina Museum of History is pleased to announce that Maria Vann will now lead the three North Carolina Maritime Museums: the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Beaufort, and the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. Vann is a historian and museum professional from New York who serves as deputy director of the North Carolina Museum of History. She holds an MA in museum studies and a BS in history. She has directed several museums, including the East Hampton Historical Society, the Maritime Museum at Battleship Cove in Massachusetts, and the Iroquois Indian Museum. Vann previously served as an adjunct history professor at the State University of New York at Oneonta and as education programs manager at the New York State Historical Association. Vann currently serves as a board member of the Small Museum Association. Her interests include colonial Dutch and maritime history and travel. Vann said, “I am thrilled to continue working permanently with the staff and the support organizations at the three NC maritime museums. The stories they share through exhibits and programs illuminate the fascinating history of North Carolina and the globe, utilizing the unique lens of maritime culture so they can tell stories in a provocative and exciting way. The North Carolina Museum of History announces the start of an exciting transformation! This historic gem, proudly affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, is gearing up to unveil a dramatic new experience in a few years that will redefine how visitors connect with the vibrant tapestry of North Carolina's past. The third-floor exhibits will close on June 3, 2024. The first-floor exhibits and the physical museum building will close on October 7, 2024. The Museum Shop will remain open to the public until December 29, 2024. The North Carolina Museum of History is delighted to welcome Brad Wilson as interim director! J. Bradley Wilson joined the NC Museum of History and Division of State History Museums as interim director on February 1, 2024. As interim director, he leads the Museum of History in downtown Raleigh and seven regional sites: the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, the Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort, the Museum of the Cape Fear in Fayetteville, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum at Hatteras, the Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the Maritime Museum in Southport, and the Tobacco Farm Life Museum that will be developed in Kenly. ? Wilson has a 40-year career in law, government service, and health care. Prior to becoming general counsel to Governor James B. Hunt Jr. in 1992, he practiced law in Lenoir for 14 years. During his 22-year career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Wilson held a variety of senior executive roles, including president and CEO from 2010 until his retirement in 2017.? ? Throughout his career, Wilson has served on numerous public, private, and charitable boards and commissions, including the UNC Board of Governors, the North Carolina Museum of History Foundation, and the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation. Wilson’s experience on the NC Museum of History Foundation board provides him with a deep knowledge of current initiatives related to the Division of State History Museums, and he will ensure that those initiatives continue to move forward during the search for a permanent director. Additionally, Wilson’s experience in executive leadership gives him the expertise necessary to support the division’s staff, review its organizational structure, and manage operations and programs during the period of transition. ? Wilson earned a BA in history from Appalachian State University, a JD from Wake Forest University School of Law, and an MA from Duke University.?
