Session proposals for #NCMC2025 are due this Friday, October 11!

After enjoying a beautiful #NCMC2024 conference in Cherokee this April, everyone in the North Carolina Museums Council is heartbroken over the devastation #HurricaneHelene caused this past weekend across Western North Carolina. Many of the landscapes, places, and sites won't be the same. Disasters like this one remind us that our work of preserving spaces and stories is invaluable. Organizations around North Carolina are providing resources to relieve the pressure on the people and environment of Western North Carolina. Session proposals are OPEN for the 2025 North Carolina Museums Council Annual Meeting & Conference in Raleigh! 2025's theme, MUSEUMS UNWALLED, highlights the importance of museums as dynamic entities that engage with communities, foster education, drive cultural change and often go beyond the building itself. By focusing on areas such as community engagement, digital and virtual presence, interdisciplinary collaborations, sustainability, accessibility, and cultural diversity, we aim to provide a comprehensive and enriching experience for all attendees. Next month, take advantage of a picture-perfect professional development opportunity at High Point Museum. On Monday, September 9, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at High Point Museum, join instructor Stephen Fletcher, Photographic Archivist for UNC’s North Carolina Collection for a Photograph Preservation Workshop. This workshop is an introduction to identifying a variety of types of photographs: daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, hand-colored silver gelatin prints, contemporary color, and digital photographs. Instruction will also focus on preservation methods and materials for proper handling, exhibition, and storage. This workshop is ideal for anyone who cares for a collection with photographs. Registration is $60 for NORTH CAROLINA PRESERVATION CONSORTIUM INC members, $85 for nonmembers, $25 for students, and includes lunch. This Saturday, August 3, join the NCMC Mountain Region for a refreshing float on the Tuckaseegee River! We'll meet at 10am at Tuckaseegee Outfitters in Whittier (look for the red double-decker bus). Transportation departs every 20 minutes. Tubing is $25 per person and can be paid on-site. No experience is required! After the float, we will grab lunch somewhere nearby. Alderson Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a retired museum professional’s lifetime of service, demonstrating NCMC’s respect and admiration for the body of work they accomplished in their career. Dusty Wescott, whose nearly 40 years of service include time at?North Carolina Historic Sites, North Carolina Museum of History, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, City of Raleigh Museum, is celebrated by his nominators for his deep knowledge of the state’s cultural evolution and #naturalhistory and readiness to share that knowledge with others.
