Working Together for a Healthy Coast
关于我们
The North Carolina Coastal Federation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the coast of North Carolina through programs that: keep the public informed about coastal management issues; educate about the coastal environment; advocate for sound coastal management decisions; and fix degraded coastal wetlands, watersheds and water quality. Since its grassroots formation in 1982, the federation has worked to engage tens of thousands of people in helping to keep the North Carolina coast healthy and pristine. Through partnerships and hands-on involvement from over 16,000 supporters, the federation seeks to engage as many people as possible in being good stewards of the coast. What we do Advocate The federation works with local, state and federal agencies to enhance environmental standards and develop more effective coastal habitat protection and restoration policies. Full-time professional coastal advocates and a contract lobbyist work with community volunteers to keep a close eye on the enforcement of environmental programs and environmental rules and legislation. Restore Land purchases and cooperative agreements with private landowners have enabled the federation to restore and protect almost 100,000 acres of coastal habitats since 1996. Working with community volunteers, students and contractors, we build, enhance and preserve oyster reefs, living shorelines, wetlands, shorebird nesting sites and native coastal forests. We also retrofit farm drainage systems and neighborhoods to reduce the amount of polluted stormwater reaching our coastal waters. Educate The federation educates thousands of people each year through volunteer opportunities with our restoration projects, field trips, in-school programs, conferences, professional workshops and community outings. Our education efforts seek to foster awareness and appreciation for the coast, while encouraging stewardship of our coastal waterways and water quality.

"Clean water is the lifeblood of everything we do, it feeds us." - Captain John Mallette. NO WETLANDS, NO SEAFOOD: In the Southeast, nearly all the commercial catch and more than half of the recreational harvest are fish and shellfish that depend on wetlands. Commercial fisherman and charter boat captain John Mallette of Southern Breeze Seafood LLC understands this better than anyone. This past weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting 26 students from Elizabeth City State University's HBCUs Outside cohort for an unforgettable day of exploration and learning at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, with sunny skies and perfect conditions for adventure! Before joining us at Jockey's Ridge, the students had the chance to explore the maritime forest Nags Head Woods, another intriguing coastal habitat. For many students, this was their first time visiting Jockey's Ridge, and it was an incredible opportunity to experience the diverse ecosystems within the park. Our day began with a visit to the Jockey's Ridge Visitors Center, followed by lunch and an engaging private program led by Park Ranger Justin Barnes. The group then embarked on a guided hike across the living dune, exploring various habitats on the way to the living shoreline. Just in time for National Estuaries Week, we learned about the estuarine system near the dunes, explored the water and nearby trails, and even had the chance to contribute to the Coastal Federation's restoration project by planting salt marsh cord grasses. It was a day filled with learning, fun, and connection with nature, and we couldn’t be prouder of the enthusiasm and engagement shown by the students. #CoastalEducation #NationalEstuariesWeek?
