Adapted Athlete, Cultivator of Fellow Athletes, and Advocate for Inclusive and Equitable Access to an Active Lifestyle for People with a Physical Disability

Echoing my late friend and co-founder, who always emphasized celebrating every victory, I'm thrilled to announce that I am officially a compensated Chief Engagement Officer of North Carolina Adapted Sports. This milestone has been made possible by the community's incredible support and belief in NCAS's mission and marks significant progress. While the rapid growth of NCAS over the past three years has been overwhelming at times, serving the community living with a physical disability in the Triangle Area is worth it and extremely rewarding. We've only just begun.

A great day, John Fleming went through some North Carolina Adapted Sports Trail Support Rider training. Learning to ride the Bowhead Corporation Rogue off-road handcycle so he can understand the perspective of adapted cyclists on the trail. He will be feeling it in the morning. I when I got off the trail today. Toan emailed me pictures of him riding a handcycle that NCAS rehabilitated for him to ride until his grant handcycle is delivered. 1.97 mile ride. It is about opportunity to pursue an active lifestyle. This made a long week worth it.

Last Saturday, North Carolina Adapted Sports had the honor to provide the Duke Adapted Sports Experience for PT, OT, PA, and Nursing students in the Duke School of Medicine. Students participated in wheelchair basketball, boccia, sitting volleyball, and adapted off-road cycling. It is a community effort to create more opportunities for people with a physical disability to live an active lifestyle. It was a rewarding day, sharing our knowledge and experiences with these students.

As the year ends and I have reflected on the past year, I still feel our late co-founder's presence as he always helped me see the wins. Despite coming about $25k short of our fundraising goal for 2025, since North Carolina Adapted Sports started official programming Nov. 2023, We: 1.???Had 49 programs, 30 Youth Wheelchair B-ball & 19 Adapted Cycling 2.???Had a total of 53.5 hours of programming 3.???Had 207 athlete program check ins 4.???Served 41 individual athletes 5.???Had 19 different disabilities served 6.???Had 38 volunteers make an impact 7.???Had 635 hours of volunteer time invested to serve athletes with a physical disability in the Triangle Area. The below pictures are our season end wins that continue to remind me that NCAS is making a difference. 1st Photo is a celebratory lunch for the Wolves Youth Wheelchair Basketball Team, as they exceeded their $5k team goal.?Hence, as promised, I dyed my beard Red. (It is actually red, no photoshopping) 2nd Photo is a post-race picture of NCAS Adapted Cycling Team, where we had 4 new adapted cyclists compete in the annual CX-Mas Cyclocross Race at Dorothea Dix, Sunday 12/15.? I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday season with friends and family. I will see you all in 2025, when NCAS programming kicks back in.

Alright, y'all, I've gotta get real for a minute. Last night hit me right in the feels. Hunter Boyd and I rolled up to the North Carolina Adapted Sports Gala, and holy moly, what a night! Our team and my girl Dana Ben were sponsors, but let me tell you, WE were the ones feeling blessed. These folks at NCAS? They're not messing around. They're out here changing lives, no exaggeration. We're talking about creating sports opportunities for people with disabilities, and let me tell you, the stories we heard... I was fighting back tears half the night! And don't even get me started on their trail projects. Eight bridges widened at Lake Crabtree alone! They've created 3 trail bypasses, making the whole park a playground for adapted cyclists of all skill levels. Over at Harris Lake, they're not slowing down either - replacing bridges left and right to make that intermediate loop accessible. And hold onto your hats, because they're involved in this massive new 286/Umstead off-road trail project. We're talking 200+ acres of accessible trails in the works. Are you kidding me? That's not just impressive, that's life-changing stuff right there. Look, I know I'm always going on about mortgages and home loans (it's my thing, after all), but nights like last night reminded me why it's so important for business owners to support organizations like this that are making lasting change. I left that gala feeling humbled, inspired, and honestly, a little fired up. We've got to do more. I've got to do more. So here's my challenge to you, my amazing LinkedIn connections... Look up NCAS https://lnkd.in/dTrzzGWH and see what they're about. And if you can, get involved. Volunteer, donate, spread the word - whatever you can do. Because at the end of the day, we're all in this crazy life together. And if we can help make someone's world a little bit bigger, a little bit brighter? ?? Well, that's what it's all about.

Today the North Carolina Adapted Sports Wolves Youth Wheelchair Basketball Team had their Make It Happen DBL the Impact practice where the counted how many dribbles in 15 minutes, baskets made in 10 minutes, and how many laps around the volleyball court in 20 minutes. The combine totals of the athletes today were: Dribbles = 4317 - Baskets Made = 170 - Laps = 272 or 9.27 miles by 7 athletes. This is the result of conditioning at the beginning of our practices all Fall. They are almost to there goal of $5k, which will result in my beard being dyed red. North Carolina Adapted Sports exists to empower individuals with disabilities, like Dennis and Toan, to experience the joy and freedom of outdoor adventure. Since joining NCAS in June at the National Trails Day Event, Toan (pictured right) has embraced a more active lifestyle. He's already conquered trails at Harris Lake and Crabtree Lake County Parks, and his newfound passion has even inspired him to compete as a wheelchair athlete in the Oak City Marathon 5k. With your support, NCAS can empower more individuals like Dennis and Toan to discover the transformative power of outdoor adventure. Your generous donation of $100, $250, or even $500 will directly impact the lives of athletes like Dennis and Toan. By choosing a recurring donation, you can sustain our programs and ensure that future athletes with a physical disability have the opportunity to experience the joy of outdoor adventure.
