In nuclear power plants, HVAC systems are crucial for maintaining safe and reliable operations by controlling temperature, humidity, and pressure within specific areas, and preventing the release of radioactive materials. When the partial meltdown happened at Three Mile Island in 1979, it wasn’t just nuclear engineers working overtime — the HVAC systems were doing serious work behind the scenes. The HVAC systems kept the air pressure lower inside the reactor building than outside, so any leaks pulled air in—not radioactive air out. Air was constantly circulated through multi-stage filters and HEPA filters captured radioactive dust and aerosol particles. Activated carbon filters absorbed radioactive gases. This combo trapped harmful particles before they could escape. HVAC also controlled humidity and temperature, reducing the risk of airborne contamination and keeping monitoring equipment stable. Without this layered HVAC and filtration setup, the accident could’ve released much more radiation to the environment. It’s a powerful reminder: HVAC isn’t just comfort—it’s critical safety tech.
