Sheriff Patrick McDermott and the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office would like to congratulate and recognize the well-earned promotions of a few of our dedicated leaders. The changes went into effect on Monday and were celebrated during our afternoon roll call as we reaffirmed our commitment to the mission of public safety in the 28 cities and towns we serve, with important updates in our Jail Operations Command - and the senior leadership of our Offender Reentry and Rehabilitation Initiatives. Congratulations to Assistant Superintendent Frank Reynolds, Assistant Superintendent Steve Shangold, Assistant Superintendent John Cosgrave, Assistant Deputy Superintendent Tom Frane, and Assistant Deputy Superintendent Matthew Sisk in your new roles! These are all well-deserved promotions involving respected leaders, each with decades of service at the sheriff’s office and beyond. During Monday’s announcement, Sheriff McDermott also thanked all of our correctional officers and non-uniformed staff for their continued commitment to the mission of county-based corrections. “Today marks a new beginning in how we manage our jail operations,” said Sheriff McDermott. “A new season in how we serve and how we lead - cultivating a system that not only runs efficiently but truly fosters rehabilitation, safety, and success for both our staff and those in our custody. Let’s get to work."

Law enforcement officers from across Norfolk County visited our Dedham correctional center on Wednesday as part of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training presented by the Brookline Police Department. The officers met with our Assistant Deputy Superintendent Tara Flynn, RN, CCHP, CCN/M, CJM who leads our Health Service Unit, and our Mental Health Director Anne Beatty Collins to talk about the care and custody of those in our facility. CIT is a model of community policing that aims to improve emergency responses to individuals with mental health and or substance use concerns. CIT combines an intensive 40-hour training for police officers with partnerships between police departments & local community service providers. That includes training on topics such as de-escalation techniques, trauma, suicide prevention, officer wellness, mental health, autism, and behavioral health in children and teenagers. Thanks to BPD and Sgt. Chris Malinn for the visit and for leading the training in these critical areas. Good luck to all of the officers involved.

Norfolk County Sheriff Patrick McDermott has announced an expansion of programming at the agency’s HOPE Center in Braintree, offering new services and support for the entire community and individuals seeking a new path after incarceration. The Hope Center's mission is to motivate, empower, teach, and assist individuals to make our communities stronger and safer. Some great work on Monday by responders from the Quincy Police Department and members of the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office. The NCSO “Are You OK?” program jumped into action, along with first responders in Quincy, when a woman who is a client of the free check-in service offered by the sheriff’s office said she needed emergency help. Kudos to Kara Likas, seen here, who remained on the line with the woman, and her community engagement colleague Kathy Rose. We were honored to be a part of a great night celebrating the work of Grow Associates, Inc. Grow, based in Randolph, is dedicated to serving adults with developmental disabilities in more than 30 local cities and towns so they can reach their full potential, and live lives enhanced by knowledge, friendship, and work. Both Sheriff Patrick McDermott and the team from Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office were recognized as a “Best Lives Booster” during a gala that featured plenty of great music and tons of dancing. The NCSO loves being part of Grow Associates’ events and BBQs and we look forward to the next time we see everyone!

It’s been a week of learning, goal-setting, team building, and some laughs for King Philip Regional School District Middle School students. Special Sheriff Christopher Bell was on hand Thursday as Nora Quinn, Tony McGaughey, and other NCSO members of the Youth Programs division worked with students on some activity-based lesson plans, developed by the sheriff’s office, that align with state standards. Our school curriculum classes are built for students in middle school and high school. On this Ash Wednesday the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office would like to thank and recognize Pastor James Butler for his dedicated service to our officers and staff and those in our care and custody. Pastor Butler is from St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dedham and he has served as a Protestant Chaplain at the NCSO for some 20 years.?Pastor Butler says his ministry at the correctional center has been a highlight of his life. This is a busy holy day for Pastor Butler, and he says Ash Wednesday is also one of his favorite days. In addition to administering ashes in our chapel for officers and staff and in our offender units, he also has two masses at St. Luke's today and he says he's in charge of dinner at home tonight! Thank you Pastor Butler for all you do.
