What's really driving participation in March Madness? New AP-NORC research reveals the psychology behind America's bracket obsession: ?? 33% cite “the glory of winning” as a major reason for participation ?? 27% are primarily motivated by potential cash winnings ?? 23% admit peer influence is their main driver ?? Only 16% participate mainly to support their school or team This nationwide poll, conducted February 6-10, 2025, surveyed 1,112 adults and gives us a glimpse into consumer behavior for one of America’s biggest sporting events. Together, We Find Evidence for a Better World. NORC at the University of Chicago is an objective, nonpartisan research organization that partners with government, corporate, and nonprofit clients around the world to inform the critical decisions facing society. For more than 80 years, NORC has used proven methods and pioneered new techniques to study the broad spectrum of human experience. We have explored the structural and personal factors that contribute to health and well-being, examined how we best learn at different stages of development, and how education systems contribute to positive and negative outcomes. NORC has charted the nature of employment and work and created deep knowledge about the state of the national economy and our relationship with money and income. We have helped governments around the world design, implement, and evaluate programs to improve the human condition. And we have probed the heart of the American psyche to understand the sometimes-conflicting views that will shape the future of the country. We now look to the future in a context of accelerating change within the industry, growing amounts and types of data, dramatic technological shifts, a dynamic population, and a growing and diversifying set of players in the research and data industries. In this environment, we must chart a course of evolutionary yet bold change that will build upon our traditional strengths to ensure our relevance, impact, and long-term sustainability.

Five years ago, when I started at Food Bank Council of Michigan, and with support from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, we began to design and implement a Fresh Food Pharmacy with my excellent colleagues at Grace Health FQHC and South Michigan Food Bank in Battle Creek, MI. We built something together than improves the lives of many people. With our excellent evaluation team at NORC at the University of Chicago, we published the results of our first pilot program. This is the culmination of a lot of hard, good work and it makes me proud and hopeful that we can keep Michigan moving on a #foodasmedicine journey.
Food is Medicine (FIM) interventions are programs that operate at the nexus between community based organizations and healthcare centers, toward a dual goal of alleviating food insecurity and thereby improving patient health. Happy to share a new co-authored publication that evaluated the outcomes of one such intervention - the Fresh Food Pharmacy program - that provided biweekly medically tailored grocery boxes and monthly nutrition coaching to adult patients with nutrition-sensitive chronic conditions seen at a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Michigan. Link to the publication is below. We found that participation in the program was associated with improvements in a range of clinical and non-clinical outcomes - HbA1C, BMI, fruit and vegetable consumption, food insecurity, medication adherence, and overall health status. This evaluation is unique as it adds to the small but growing body of literature on medically tailored grocery programs, and is one of the few studies on FIM programs implemented in an FQHC, a relatively understudied setting in this space. #foodismedicine #fqhc #medicallytailored #chronicdisease #publichealth #nutritionresearch Katelin Alfaro Hudak Dawn Opel Amanda Feighner, MS, RDN Lauren Squires

“What gets measured gets done.”” ? The Brookings Institution explains why data limits our understanding of public safety in many communities. That's why tools like our Live Crime Tracker are so important!?
The Brookings Institution shared a compelling essay highlighting the potential for state and local leaders to collaborate across regions to reduce crime and expand opportunities. One key takeaway is the challenge of limited data, especially when it comes to understanding crime trends in rural and suburban areas. As the authors note, "what gets measured gets done," yet while most Americans live in these areas, only a third of suburban and rural communities have adequate crime data reporting. The article notes that tools like the Real-Time Crime Index and NORC at the University of Chicago's Live Crime Tracker have made strides—particularly in larger cities— but data gaps remain a hurdle for policymakers looking to implement targeted public safety solutions in rural and suburban areas. We fully agree that addressing these data gaps is critical to creating more effective, region-specific strategies for improving public safety. #PublicSafety #DataDrivenSolutions #CrimePrevention https://lnkd.in/e3QWaN7N

So proud to have worked on this incredible project. Many thanks to our partners and especially to the teachers and administrators whose thoughtful input and dedication made it a success.
The problem? Education data exists in silos. The solution? An innovative data ecosystem that provides educators with real-time insights on middle school math experiences. Check out our infographic to learn more about our pilot of a secure data system for educators—or visit the project page for details:?go.norc.org/CLIP

Determining whether data are trustworthy and reliable and fit for the purpose at hand is essential to making informed decisions with data. Online panels are a case in point. These panels are basically groups of people that a research organization surveys repeatedly on different topics for different customers. Many companies maintain online panels that they claim are representative of the general US population or various key subgroups (e.g., college students) when in fact they are not. Usually these are opt-in panels and are not based on probability sampling. The only way to know whether the survey is truly representative of the group you want to understand is if the company is transparent about the methods it used to create the panel. Lack of transparency is, of course, a red flag. But sometimes the “transparency” the company provides leaves a lot to be desired. For example, simply because an opt-in panel is reweighted to the demographics of the general population doesn’t mean it isn’t still biased based on who actually opted in. NORC’s online, probability based panel, AmeriSpeak is fully representative of the US general population and provides a transparent and comprehensive set of measures of data quality and details on methodology. When assessing the usefulness of any data set it’s important to know what questions to ask, and to assess the data set carefully to determine whether it will really meet your needs. The article below from the AmeriSpeak team shows you how to do just that when it comes to surveys of the American people.
Transparency isn't just a value at AmeriSpeak—it's the foundation that enables us to deliver accurate, actionable insights you can trust. In his recent keynote address at the 2025 CIPHER conference, our executive director David Dutwin identified critical elements organizations should examine when evaluating survey panel quality and reliability. His presentation outlined 12 essential touchpoints of panel transparency that empower researchers and decision-makers to confidently assess methodological integrity.
