Nonprofits are hurting right now, and not just for financial reasons. 77% of nonprofits reported in the 2025 State of the Nonprofit Sector say they're "finding it difficult to recruit senior leadership, while two-thirds of respondents revealed they do not have a leadership training or mentorship program currently implemented." Financial woes may not be fixable in the short term, but these leadership blind spots can be a quick fix IF they're prioritized. Leadership training and mentorship programs don't need to be fancy. They can be as simple as intentional 1-on-1 conversations and sit-ins with younger team members. How to write clear, inclusive job descriptions: 1) Avoid unintentionally biased language: For example, terms like “tech wizard” or "digital native" may deter women and older applicants from applying, even if their skills match the job listing. Instead of leaning on vague phrases and buzzwords, say exactly what you mean. 2) Get specific: What do the role's day-to-day tasks and responsibilities actually look like? What kind of decisions/people will this person have authority over? Be clear, and use simple language when possible (no overly complicated jargon). 3) Be upfront about compensation: People want pay transparency, plain and simple. I’m watching as institutions, organizations, and companies—big and small—quietly remove DEI from their websites, their hiring structures, and the very frame of their business. Let’s be clear: DEI has not just been a moral imperative. It has been financially proven to increase revenue, innovation, and customer engagement. Your future employees see you. Your current and future customers see you. The world sees you. And more than anything—we will remember you. This is not the world of Encyclopedia Britannica anymore. That could be hidden, burned, or rewritten. We now live in the age of the internet—where every decision is documented, archived, and searchable. Receipts exist. Where you stood during this time will be remembered. How close to the line you stood—will be remembered. Whether you stayed silent, removed language quietly, or stood boldly—it will be remembered. You may say, “I’m just trying to pay rent,” or “We can’t afford to take a stand right now.” And while I get that tension—even when you stand on the line, you’re on one side or the other. The line is not neutral ground. Call it what you want. Rebrand it how you like. But history is watching. And documenting. This is a different world now. Choose your side with intention.
